Thank you @caron ! I meant to set an alarm last night to check in the middle of the night, but I forgot. I am definitely going to try that method though. I’m also going to leave the bottle trap out (without food in it) next to some water. Hopefully curiosity will get the best of her and she’ll investigate. I’ll make a new post if/when I find Ember just to keep everyone updated. I really appreciate all of the advice, support, and positivity from everyone who has commented thank you all
Oh and to anyone wondering, yes I changed my username. “Foxfire” just wasn’t fitting for a variety of reasons. This feels more “me.” Sorry for any confusion I might have caused
Lol! I wish I had seen this earlier because I was wondering if I was losing it! I’m an old lady so sudden changes like this really throw me off! Lol!
And @anon5387911 I like your new name! When you find Ember you should change her name to Houdini! Lol!
Maybe her middle name can be Houdini lol. But Ember is too perfect of a name for me to change it. She has such vibrant reds and yellows, but her sides are a light ash color (she is het. cinder, but I’m not sure if that influences her coloring at all since Cinder is a recessive trait). She reminds me of the colors of a bright ember, right after a fire has died down. She wasn’t nearly as vibrant when I first got her, but with each shed the yellows are coming in and she’s grown into her namesake very nicely. Here’s a picture of her sides (I also just like how she’s laying here )
She is so lovely! Yes the name “Ember” certainly fits her! She can be Ember aka “Houdini! Lol! How old is she btw?
She’s officially 1 year old as of July 16th
Ok so she is not itty bitty so that’s good.
@anon5387911 Do you have a pile of clothes somewhere in your apartment? I had a dream last night that Ember is under a pile of laundry /clothing…… I don’t believe in things like this but hey, it’s worth a try!
I’m not sure if this helps at all but we lost a baby lizard today. Hoping she comes out of hiding
I hope @caron’s dream was accurate! Even if Ember wasn’t in a pile of clothes today, maybe tomorrow. Ember wouldn’t be the first to turn up that way. In fact, with a creature on the lam, it is a good idea to give your laundry a good look-through before popping it in the washer.
Don’t give up hope. They truly can turn up months after disappearing. I would keep trying with the bottle trap, too. Don’t forget that other scents may be appealing to her besides mouse. They’ve been known to go for hot dog, bacon, tuna, salmon, bologna, fried chicken, egg…
I’m sorry, @bradburyesqu . I hope you find your baby soon!
We did. It was my fault. I keep forgetting how inexperienced my wife is and I handed her a bay lizard without telling her how to hold it. She tried to cup it on her chest and she wiggled free. But I found her
Oh good! I’m happy that you found the baby. It does take practice learning how to corral some of these bitty wrigglers.
@caron I don’t have a pile on the floor or anything, I keep my laundry in a laundry basket, but I’ll definitely check it again. As @caryl mentioned, I’ve been going through my laundry thoroughly before washing, and moving the laundry basket in case she’s under/around it.
I know for a fact Ember likes tuna. The only time she ever tried to bite me (and I use the word “bite” loosely. She was so gentle, slow, and polite, didn’t even break skin) was when I made something with tuna for dinner. I washed my hands before handling her, but you know how strong that smell is. I’ve actually tried scenting pinkies with tuna and leaving them out for her, hoping it would lure her out of hiding, but that didn’t work
@bradburyesqu I’m glad you found your baby!
Ok. Just a thought. Do you have any bookshelves? Or anything she could climb up on and into? Have you looked behind your refrigerator? Maybe in the coils if there are any?
And maybe you could just leave some tuna juice in all the rooms of your apartment. Also look behind and on all the shelves of any book cases you might have.
I might try the tuna juice. That’s something I haven’t done yet. And I have checked all of those places already. I still check in and around furniture, but the appliances are hard for me to move on my own. A few weeks after she escaped, I had a neighbor help me move appliances and no sign of her. At this point I feel like I’ve exhausted most of my options and looked everywhere I can think to look. I’m going to keep leaving water out, keep trying the bottle trap, but I think my best bet is trying to catch her while she’s out - flipping on the lights in the middle of the night, catching her taking a drink, etc. I really appreciate your suggestions, and the suggestions of everyone else. Ember just seems to be very good at not being found
Lol! Yes those little stinker noodles can squeeze inside and into anything! The longer she hides the hungrier and thirstier she will be.
You still have plenty of time for her to show her little corn face and I still say she will……
If you’ve got something like a mag light, it can be helpful to prowl around at night and use that. Even a regular flashlight can work, though they’re not as bright. Its narrow beam as opposed to the overhead lights really helps a human focus on what’s visible in the beam so a partially exposed or camouflaged snake is more easily seen. It’s also less likely than an overhead light to make the snake dash for cover while you’re looking the other direction. It’s a thought.
That’s a good idea. I do have a small flashlight I could use
