Not who I was expecting this from. Bellatrix just randomly dropped a slug while cruising her enclosure.
No change from Astoria and I just had her soaking for a few. I’m getting nervous and feeling a bit in foreign territory with this situation.

I decided to take a closer look after work and found two more slugs from Bellatrix. It’s looking like she may repeat last year and slug out 
Still no progress from Astoria but she did have a pretty big poo. Maybe that will help things move along. She’s due for another round of injections in a couple hours

If they are anything at all like mammals, those are the same and nearby muscles, so hopefully that means those muscles are working to do their job with the eggs too!

A little bit of progress! The lowest most egg has moved its way down and is now only about an inch from her cloaca. She had her second calcium injection and I’ll do one more soak before bed. Hopefully she will make more progress in the quiet of the night.

Well no changes overnight so we are back at the vet. Going to try an enema to see if we can loosen some things up. Crossing all my fingers and toes.
Bellatrix has also laid another 4 slugs today. Ah you win some you lose some. At least she hasn’t gotten egg bound too so I will count my blessings there.

Got some compacted feces out, but no progress on eggs . She does feel weirdly puffy and thick so as a precaution and last ditch effort we’ve started her on antibiotics and an anti inflammatory. If she still hasn’t had any change by Monday then she will go into surgery. Oh man, I really am rooting for her body to take care of itself.

Holy smokes Erin! Draaken and I are really hoping it doesn’t come down to surgery! She just doesn’t wanna give up those egg does she? Poor little baby girl! I will add her to my prayer list for sure!

I have nothing good to update. I failed Astoria and she is no longer here. She remained stable and active all through the weekend and even ate. My vet and I both felt pretty confident surgery would go well. When she got in there though she immediately found infection, abscesses and fluid in the oviduct. We discussed continuing vs euthanasia and I decided, with how bright and active Astoria was even this morning, to try for a spay. The more the vet dug though the worse it got. Farther up her abdomen eggs had ruptured through the oviduct and there was incredible amounts of infection, pustules and egg material in the body cavity. We both agreed at that point there was no fixing this and it would be kinder to let her go than put her through intense surgery with a still guarded outcome. I am absolutely shocked that outwardly she appeared so stable with how much of a nightmare was brewing inside her body. Looking back I feel that the puffiness she had last week was probably the start of all this. I wish I could turn back time and do things differently.

Aw man Erin! Another loss in such a relatively short period of time! You know how well and why even domesticated animals hide their infirmities until it becomes obvious that something is wrong. Do not, sweet girl, second guess yourself/beat yourself up over this. You do not hesitate a minute if one of your animals needs vet attention. If you felt in your gut that something was wrong sooner, you would have addressed it immediately. Nature is brutally cruel and dishonest sometimes. I hate it.
Take this time to cherish those beloved creatures that you still have. Remember that Astoria is enjoying her new pain free little body, while surfing the green grass on the other side of The Rainbow Bridge……She’s just fine now……

You know exactly where my head has been at the last few hours. I’m so, so tired. Right now I’m feeling a lot like a sorry excuse of an owner and a worse breeder. Your words will help a lot.

Sweet baby you know in your heart neither is even remotely true. You have just had some hard knocks. Nature/illness takes the animal with no regard for keeper….

Oh Erin, I am so sorry to check in on this thread and see that update.
You didn’t fail in any way. Unfortunately these sorts of things happen and it’s so difficult for owners who care so much. You went above and beyond for her. And even took the care to want her happiness in the end over your own. That is SO important. That’s a true sign you are doing right.
