Introducing a Rare Species: Trinket Snakes! New Project

Hi y’all! There was some interest shown the other day with my new trinket snake, so I wanted to make a post about them! I am so excited to get into this species and I hope that they will become more popular in the hobby! These are basically the perfect snakes, in my opinion. I’m really excited to start breeding them and am looking to import a couple of bloodlines from the EU if I can in the spring. This is an exciting new project for Inspiration Exotics and I’m in contact with Christen of Stygian Exotics, where I got this girl and who has been breeding them for a few years now.

Trinket snakes are small colubrids native to parts of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The adults grow to around 4ft in length, so unlike some other old world rat snakes, they stay a more manageable size (than beauties, for instance). These snakes in captivity are calm and handleable, less flighty than other rat snakes, plus they have an adorable threat display that they rarely use if they’re comfortable, but they’ll make a large S-curve and flatten out their necks to look bigger. There are some awesome pictures on google.

In terms of husbandry, these are really approachable. Like beauty snakes, they prefer somewhat cooler temperatures. I’m keeping my girl at a hotspot of 85 degrees and frequently find her on the cooler side of the enclosure. In the wild the hottest they usually get is 86-87, while their cooler temperatures can dip into the 50s during the winter months, and they prefer 70+% humidity. I’m really excited to deck out a big enclosure for this girl once she’s bigger!

Anyway, just wanted to share this amazing species and say keep on the lookout for me breeding them in the future!

What a gorgeous little snake! Her pattern is so beautiful and unique, I love it! I love those black lines behind her head.

It sounds like they make pretty awesome pets, too. Their husbandry actually sounds quite similar to my blood python (cooler 85F hot spot, moderate humidity, hangs out a lot on the cool end). Are they mostly terrestrial, or do they like to climb?

I’ll have to look into these guys more, and I hope you’ll share your experiences with them going forward. I’d love to learn more about these pretty little snakes.

She’s super cute.

It’s nice seeing these little guys pick up some fans in the hobby. I’ve been seeing them pop up from time to time.

I will definitely be keeping this thread updated about this little girl as she grows. This species is mostly terrestrial, but they will happily climb if you offer the opportunity and they also, from what I’ve heard, appreciate being able to burrow!

Thank you!! I’m super excited to watch her grow too! And a couple days ago, I actually took the plunge and got an unrelated male from another breeder, so I’m super excited to add a full grown male to my collection! I can’t wait to work with an adult and watch her as she grows up. She’s a fantastic eater already, nothing phases her.

She’s an excellent eater and so, so easy to handle. What an amazing girl. A couple update pictures of her:

And then, I took the plunge a couple of days ago on an unrelated male. He’s already a breeding size adult, so he’ll be a pet here for a couple of years until she is ready to breed, but I can’t wait to work with an adult. I wasn’t planning on getting a male so quickly but when I found out he was unrelated I had to jump on it. He’s GORGEOUS:
