That last one is a Montane trinket snake, a subspecies. Coelognathus helena helena (common trinket snake, the first 4 pics) and Coelognathus helena monticollaris (Montane trinket snake). (All of these pictures are from iNaturalist!)
Whoa!! That first one is yellow. Two down, that guy looks like they’ve got some bright oranges. The line projects for this species could be absolutely incredible.
They absolutely could be. Unfortunately, they are not legal to export from any of their current range, so the animals we already have in captivity are the only ones we will ever have, at least for the forseeable future.
A friend at the herpetological society locally took these pictures when I took Po to show off at a meeting to teach people about trinket snakes. I thought they showed off his colors really nicely, so here they are!!
Well, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, I’m getting two new trinket snakes, a male and a female, on Wednesday. They’re gorgeous and I’m so excited. The bad thing is, they came in from an importer from the EU (I won’t name the importer) and they are coming in at less than hatchling size and with serious respiratory infections. Needless to say, this importer was not a good experience.
(Big thanks to Christen at Stygian Exotics for the photos. Christen is a lovely human.)
Really hoping with some heat, humidity, and with a vet visit if necessary, these guys will kick the RIs.
They still look alert in these photos so that’s always a good sign!
I’d assume less then hatchling size is just the variance in wild trinkets possibly breeding smaller because the competition in the wild vs the well fed babies being raised up and growing well in captivity.
Heck even in my last 2 BP clutches the size difference was wild. One clutch was all 82-94g and the other was all around 55g. Just different egg sizes and momma ages. Lol
Well, these are CBB because it is illegal to export them from India and we bought basically part of two clutches, so they are definitely CBB from two different clutches. You can’t export them from their native range, so these were definitely produced in captivity, and they’re small. Most baby trinkets hatch out around 6g, these are coming in at 3-4g. It’s like the breeder didn’t feed them at all before just throwing them in a deli and shipping them, plus they seem to have lost weight as their body condition isn’t ideal. And they also all have respiratory infections, so definitely not a good experience with this importer. But you’re right, they are alert and they’re eating, so that’s a good sign. My fingers are crossed that they’ll make it.
Oh eeeew. Yeah that’s definitely an problem then. Poor lil guys. I was really hoping it was a WC issue or something but yeah… With that info on the exports. Ick.
Yeah, same. If they were WC I’d totally just acknowledge it as a risk, but with CBB, I definitely expected established, healthy animals. Oh well. I know never to work with this importer again.
I hope so! They already (according to Christen) sound better than they did when they first came in, so I’m hoping with some heat and humidity and TLC and maybe some antibiotics, they’ll be just fine. I’ve already got a vet visit scheduled for them in two weeks, and if they’re doing better and don’t seem to need antibiotics by then, I’ll just cancel the appointment and get my deposit back.
The beauties came in this morning from Christen! We decided to ship them rather than handing off at Tinley so that we didn’t risk giving the RIs to any of the other healthy snakes she’s bringing to hand off to people. They are tiny worms, but they are BEAUTIFUL. With these two in I now have two pairs of these guys, so can’t wait to start producing them in the future.
Those are gorgeous little worms! I hope you are able to turn them around. Christen is anwesome and I don’t doubt she gave them as good of a heads start as she could muster in her time with them.
Huge thanks to @ghsaltie for giving me a heads up yesterday about a pair of trinkets being sold! I picked up Infrared Reptiles’ pair of common trinket snakes last night and will be receiving them this coming Tuesday, so as soon as I have pictures of them, I’ll post here! This leaves me with 3.3, which is exactly the number I wanted!
They are here! I now have all six of my trinket snakes and am so excited to get them going. Thank you again to @ghsaltie for letting me know that Infrared Reptiles was selling her pair of trinkets - I was able to hop on and get them, so the new pair arrived today! Everyone, meet Skye (male, first picture) and Ashen (female, second picture). Along with Katsa, Po, Bitterblue, and Saf, these two complete my 3.3 group of Common Indian Trinket Snakes!
