Is my hognose okay?

My new hognose has been staying in a corner behind the new skull I got him. He’s been sleeping like against the glass and i’ve never seen him move from there ever since. I got this little guy on may 10 and I handled him on the 1st week which was probably a bad idea because he didn’t eat that Friday. The pet store I got him from said that they fed him every Friday. So I haven’t held him since that Friday. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday he was very active. Then on Wednesday I saw him just laying behind the skull with his head peaking out. Later on that Wednesday he was laying against the glass not moving an inch. Then on Thursday he’s in the same spot, different position but still laying there. Today it’s feeding day I just put the pinkie on a piece of cardboard and put it on top of the skull and coconut hide. Like between them. I really hope he eats this pinkie. I know snakes can last months without eating but it still worries me.

Here is his enclosure:

I know I have been posting a lot but I just wanna make sure that he’s okay. This is my first snake ever. He’s also little so that makes me worry about him even more.

He definitely needs more clutter like fake foliage, cork bark, paper towel rolls etc to fill up the open space. He doesn’t feel secure enough to eat. What are your temps? If he’s by the glass on the cool side he might be too hot. If he doesn’t eat the pink, make the necessary suggested adjustments and only after that attempt another feed.

His tank is way too bare for a baby hog……

@reptilelover_334 My boy is a juvenile but he’s still in the same tub I put him in when I got him last year. He eats most every time because he feels safe enough to eat.

He has a heat mat on one side……

I agree with Caron that you may need to downsize until he’s bigger and more comfortable. I don’t recall from your original thread, has he eaten at all for you since you brought him home?
Changing the enclosure and helping him feel secure will be the first step but depending on the answer to the above there are some other options too.

No. He just went past the pinkie the first time I tried to feed him.

So would It be better if I moved him into a reptile carrier? Its a lot smaller. I don’t think i’ll be able to get a heat mat though.

No. Do not put him in a carrier with no heat. Reptiles are not supposed to live in carriers. Work with what you have. All you have to do is make a few adjustments. Just add clutter even if it’s just some toilet paper/paper towel rolls if you don’t have access to anything else.

But what are the heat temps? The hot side should be no warmer than 90 degrees.

I don’t know yet. I tried plugging the heat lamp into a thermostat but it turned off after a little bit. Guess I’ll have to get a temp gun. The bulb I got is a exo Terra 50W intense basking spot.

I only have a couple minutes at the moment but the thermostat you have is likely a basic on/off type instead of a dimming or pulse proportional type.
Definitely get a temp gun as soon as you can. It’s one of my most important tools in my reptile room. Once you have that you can spot check all over the enclosure to see what his temps are. Also I can’t see if you have a thermometer in there but go digital over analog. The analog thermometers are not very accurate.
For now until the necessary changes are made in the enclosure don’t offer any food for another 5-7 days. Generally I recommend a feeding schedule of every 4-5 days for this size, but offering too frequently during a strike can actually have the opposite effect and stress him into not taking it.

Thank you!

Do not worry about posting too much! We are here to help in ANY way we can. Most importantly, we need to get your baby eating consistently, Do you know how old he is? Maybe a hatchling? I think I remember you posting a pic of him on another thread and he looked pretty young. If you can provide as much information as possible that would be helpful. But most of all try not to stress yourself too much. He will be fine!

Ok, thank you! And no I don’t know what age he is. I don’t know if the pet store I bought him from knows either.

I actually found some artificial leaves that I got from a kit. I put them in the hognoses snakes enclosure. I also added a toilet paper roll in the front so its like a tunnel. i might make it longer by adding another. This is temporary. When I get artificlal succulents, leaf littler, etc. I’ll remove the leaves.

I took pictures but i need to email them to my laptop in order to send them.

It kinda looks messy but I guess that means its good?

That’s great! You can bury the tp rolls as well. Also you can use paper towel rolls too. Any plastic plants, leaf litter etc will work too. Remember all this is just temporary until he starts eating for you. Tissue boxes will work for hides. You will have to cut them down a bit.
