I didn’t know I would go down a rabbit hole for jumping spiders in this thread, but omg. Oh my gawd. The amount of babies she had. :grimacing: W O W… and the time it must take to separate every single one of them out. I have more questions than answers. Do spiders do multiple eggs/births a year or is only one like a ball python? What’s the average baby amount? What happens if they get out in your house. How do you know the sex? Just oh. my. god.

Yes! So far Venus is on her second egg sac which the babies are just now emerging from it! They can lay around 3-6 egg sacs from one pairing!

100-300 per egg sac. Sadly most of them do not survive (somewhat not sad cause that’s a lot of spiders to care for). That’s why they have that many though because most of them do end up not making it. Right now only around 10-15 or so have survived from this first egg sac i believe, but i’m going to try to do better with this second one.

If it’s a baby it probably won’t survive. My boy jumper who’s the dad of all these babies, Pluto, got out once for not that long. He only moved like 4 feet and made himself comfortable at the top of the window where the enclosures are.

For Regal jumping spiders, males tend to be black and white. They will have very long front legs and will have bulbs at the end of their pedipalps once mature. Females will usually be more colorful and won’t have the bulbs. Females also tend to be bigger than males. Normally you can pretty much tell their sex by i5 or i6 but if you want to be certain you can wait until they’re mature.

Yeah so i definitely shouldn’t have seperated them all so soon and i think that might be a reason most of them didn’t make it. Now i know it’s best (and soooo much easier) to keep them together until i4 or early i5. I have all the remaining ones together right now and it’s so much easier to feed them lol. I should be taking the new babies out pretty soon and i will definitely keep them together from the beginning this time.

Hope I could answer all your questions!

WOW. Nature ignored the norm on this.

My last stupid question - what does i4/i5/i6 mean?

First of all, none of these are stupid questions lol. Now to answer your question, the i in i4/i5/i6 stands for instar. It’s basically just a fancy way to say how many times they’ve molted. So they’ll usually be ready to be sold around i5/i6 which just means they’ve molted 5 or 6 times. Feel free to ask as many questions as you’d like to! I love answering them!

Second egg sac babies have been moved out of mommas enclosure!

Some pictures of a baby and a quick picture of Venus!

How do you move the sack? I’d be nervous af.

I use tweezers and just am very careful. I have extremely shaky hands so it’s very nerve racking but the babies will normally stay inside the nest so i don’t have to worry about them escaping.

Moved two of the babies into their own enclosures!

It appears this baby has issues with their back legs or spinneret. It’s possible it could be something psychological if it’s not something physical. It falls easily and when it does, it’s not able to reach the floor and just hangs suspended in the air. If it’s a short enough distance it will land on its back most of the time and not be able to right itself. It’s in an 8oz cup right now but i’m probably gonna move it into a 1oz for a bit in hopes that it’ll get better and won’t just be stuck in the air when i’m not around to help it. I’m gonna monitor it in the 8oz for a bit longer though because i’m hoping it’s just stress from being moved cause i did just move it, although non of the other had any issues. I’m gonna do my best to help this baby survive but i’m not too hopeful sadly.

30 minutes later and the baby is acting more normal. I think it might have just been stress or something from moving, was very weird though. I will continue to check on it every once in a while before i go to bed. I’m honestly surprised at how well it’s doing so quickly compared to how it was just 30 minutes ago. It was to the point where i thought it wasn’t going to live through the rest of the day and now i have a lot more hope for it. It’s still not normal and still slightly struggling with its web but when it falls it has a lot more control and isn’t landing on its back. I will update how the baby’s doing a bit later.
