Juvenile male crestie developed a wavy tail! Advice please!

Hello I have a nine month old male crested gecko. I have noticed within the past week there is a wave in his tail. I’m really concerned if its something bad but he gets crickets dusted in Calcium 3 times a week and pangea all the other days. I mist his enclosure twice a day and he has available water. He is still pretty active and sociable and acting normal. Any advice would be great.

What’s the humidity like? And does he actually eat his pangea, or does he just wait for the bugs? Feeding him daily, and bugs 3/7 days, seems like a lot of food.

He eats the pangea about half a “cap” full daily. His appetite is pretty solid. His enclosure stays around 77-79 degrees as well and is consistently misted

I would personally cut it down to bugs once a week and CGD twice a week, make sure the humidity is good (like do you just spray the tank in general or do you make sure to keep the substrate moist as well?) and make sure he’s always got water available, and then keep an eye on it

There could be a chance that he has had this since he was born and is now showing itself more for some reason. Definitely keep an eye on it, do you know how to check his calcium sacs (in the mouth, kind of near the back of the throat)?

If they are tiny or nonexistent but he’s been eating well there could be a calcium absorption issue.

Yeah the entire tank is well misted twice a day. So pangea only twice a week? I would just be concerned from switched him from having it available consistently. Every few days he won’t eat the pangea so I’m assuming he will be okay? Will it affect him if I do change it?

No I’ve never checked before but I will see what I can see. But if it is a calcium absorption issue how can I remedy that

Reptile multivitamins, calcium absorption or the lack thereof is remedied by Vitamin D3. You can also specifically buy calcium supplemented with D3

Thank you I will look in his mouth when he is awake tonight!

I was able to see inside he happened to be awake. I’m not seeing calcium sacs. What should I do? Start supplements?

I see them, however they are small.

Ideally you’d want to see them more filled out and round though, like small white pearls. I’d reccomend doing a multivitamin supplement and calcium with D3 when dusting insects.

If the tail wave does not improve or worsens and you notice other parts of the body beginning to deform you’ll need to take your CG to the vet.

Okay how often should I give calcium?

When you feed insects. Don’t mix it in the Pangea- its formulated to already have calcium in it. If you don’t already I’d reccomend looking into the Pangea Growth and Breeding mix, it contains BSFL that are rich in nutrients and very healthy for insectivores.

Thank you so much you are a life saver truly. So 3 times a week for insects is okay? And how long should I watch this and see improvement. This is my first ever reptile so im learning alot

Insects 1x a week and Pangea 2-3x a week will keep your CG at a healthy weight. Just make sure the insects are dusted with multivitamin and calcium.

You are getting some solid advice! I feed the Pangea Breeding & Growth to my adult Chameleon Gecko Breeders & the babies. That’s some good stuff! Highly recommend it!

Even if you are not breeding…..
