Results of the test pairing, Leopard motley het “Dappled” stripe x “Cubed” stripe are:
9 more or less ordinary motleys
1 leopard type motley
5 “Dappled” with a range of spotting on dorsal

Don’t these numbers suggest incom dom if not dominant inheritance for the pattern-modifying mutation (Leopard-Dappled)?

they do suggest (incomplete dominance) but, it’s a pretty small sample. The motleys would also suggest otherwise. And in the original pairing, while some of the motleys did have some hourglass or bowtie markings, there were only two with the extreme appearance like the hypo of this clutch, though some did exhibit nice banding. Maybe it just affects stripe differently than it does motley?

I know you’re not looking to prove this out with massive numbers of animals (totally reasonable). That said, I’d love to see one of the Leopard/Dappled phenotype animals paired with a Sunspot phenotype Stripe. Btw, does anyone know if Motley presents in unusual any when paired with a Sunspot Stripe? I know those would be het Motley-het Stripe, so the phenotype would be Motley. Curious if there is anything usual about it.

I actually might have a lead on one but I’m on the fence because the owner wants to buy one of my animals outright and I would kind of rather do a collaboration. Like you said they are not that common. But you might be on to something even if it meant my new morph has been around it would be nice to figure out what it is. They both seem to have originated in California afaik

I have a sad update on this project… The original pairing clutch hatched last week. Here is the text from my instagram post:

This is an update for the leopard motleys clutch. As a lot of you know I have been excited about the Dappled stripes that came from this pairing. I will admit that I was getting dollar signs in my eyes. But this isn’t what breeding corn snakes is about for me. I want to be forthcoming about the fact I have also gotten some kinked babies from this pairing. It happened last year and I was hoping it was an incubator glitch but I can’t justify two years in a row of babies with kinks. I don’t know if this one will survive but will give it a chance. I’m still excited about the dappled corns but I think I will only make males available in the interest of outcrossing the morph. My outcross pairing was healthy. If you have snakes from this line I strongly suggest you outcrossing rather than line breeding them.

I did get some nice babies like this one, it’s just that I also got a few with spines like accordions… very heartbreaking

Thanks for the kind words. It’s the right thing to do. I think they are just very inbred and I have high hopes that by outcrossing these the problem can be resolved. I just won’t be putting the original pair, siblings together, or offspring back with parents. The bright side is that even the outcrosses seems to get the crazy patterns, based on my other pairing results.

Aw, I’m sorry, that’s so disappointing. But it sounds like outcrossing should help. Remember what a mess lavender was when it was first being worked with? And now it seems to be a perfectly healthy morph.

I’m sorry to hear this, Jen. Hopefully outcrossing will help sort out the morph questions and resolve the kinking issues. Kudos to you for your honesty. That’s the best part of this update. The hobby can only really move forward when people care more about the animals than about potential short term dollars. Thanks for being one of the good ones.
