Delilah just molted! I really struggled to get decent pictures, the lighting by all my spider enclosures is awful, and I couldn’t use a flash without an awful glare.
I love it when all my spiders are out at the same time. It’s been happening more and more ever since Pixie apparently molted out of her shyness and is now out more often than not. Love watching these three!
I broke down and bought 3 more enclosures from Tarantula Cribs (super expensive) and rehoused 1 of my T’s tonight. @spottedbull I think the one I rehoused is actually a Trinidad Chevron. I think it was mis labeled at the pet store. I will take a picture of it if it emerges again……
I love Tarantula Cribs! But yeah, they ain’t cheap. I’ve been putting off ordering the upgrades I know my two Ts will need fairly soon. As much as I like them, I know that if/when my collection grows by much more, I’m going to have to find some more affordable alternatives (of which there are many, admittedly).
Terrestrial and fossorial tarantulas do really well in the Wal-Mart acrylic shoe boxes. You just have to add a few more air holes and secure a way to keep the lids on. When I get back I can take some pics of what I did.
Yes @jawramik there are tons of cheaper alternatives, especially on Amazon, but Tarantula Cribs is addictive because they are so nice and very well made imo.
Thank you for the picture @spottedbull! I will try to compare yours to mine. From what I think mine looks similar.
I do have the same shoe boxes you are referring to with the clips from Etsy although I didn’t add more holes? Both T’s that are in them are doing great. My curly hair is molting right now……
The rest of my T’s are too small and I think most of them are dwarfs……
Philly isn’t much of a climber (or an ‘anythinger’ really, she just kinda sits there in the open disregarding hides or burrows haha), so when she goes full Tarzan after cage changes she freaks my brother out so much
Honestly I’m kicking myself for not realizing it sooner! While the edges are too sharp for me to consider for my leo, both my T and my hermit crab are loving their little buckets!
Yeah, I figured it out in a panic when I realised the only cork bark I had was too big, thick, and clunky to use in the small enclosure I had, so I had to figure out another hide in a hurry. I found that little mini-pot out in my garden, and it was the perfect size.
I have used the ceramic pot holders. They are like 3 legs that hold a ceramic saucer. I currently have on in my jones armadillo lizard enclosure. It provides both a hide and a basking spot. So now I gotta get some pots too!
Just curious, have any of you noticed drastic changes in the temperament/personality of your tarantula (or other invert) after a molt? I’d heard that it was a thing that could happen, but I’m observing it for the first time myself with my curly hair, Pixie. She went from being a shy and reclusive pet hole that I’d only catch brief glimpses of during feeding time, to being very bold and active after her last molt. She’s not only out of her burrow almost all the time, but she’s often strolling around her enclosure. She’s been in this enclosure for several months, so it’s not the “new enclosure” behaviour we discussed above. It’s interesting. Not that I’m complaining! I love getting to see so much of her and I love watching her wander around. She’s still a juvenile, so I’ll be interested to see if her temperament will change again with future molts. Just curious if anyone else has seen anything similar with their inverts.
Here she is just now, exploring the wall of her enclosure.
Found this pretty little orb weaver at work yesterday. She had a beautiful web, though unfortunately she wasn’t actually in the web (would have made for a better picture, oh well).
