Hey y’all! I just wanted to share these guys here. I started in crested geckos and gargoyle geckos, and since then have decided to move completely away from gargoyles and pare down my cresties significantly so that I can really get going with chahoua geckos! I adore these geckos and I can’t believe that I just ignored them when I first got into New Cals. So anyway, I just figured I would post my two future pairs here and see what y’all think!
And I’m super excited to see how their babies turn out - I’ve heard that chewies can be difficult to predict in terms of color development, so I’m excited to see that. Both of these guys are in the 40-50g range, so a little more growing and another year of maturing to do.
Then I got these two - no names decided yet and I can’t wait to see how their colors develop. The male (first one) I think will end up being red/maroon based on lineage, but the second (girl) I’m really not sure.
What do y’all think about these pairings? Should I switch anything up? Obviously they need to grow more, so I think my earliest year producing chewies will be probably 2025 for my older two and 2026 at minimum for the younger ones, potentially 27.
Does anyone else here work with chewies and have pairings or babies to show off?
They’re truly lovely! Their natural camouflage is excellent, and the pops added here and there with selective breeding are so unique. I love the fact that each and every one is truly one of a kind.
In my opinion, they have the best personalities of all of the New Caledonian geckos. They have a lot more going on in their brains than cresties (I love my cresties, they’re just really dumb) - they’re more curious and interactive, and the chahouas also jump a lot less than cresties so they are easier in general to handle and calm down quite well if you handle regularly.
Those sound like personality traits I would really appreciate! Thanks for your informed reply. I have never been around them at all, only admired them online or at an occasional expo.
I love chewies! Like you, I initially overlooked them. The initial pictures I saw didn’t jump out at me as anything special (for some reason), I couldn’t understand why they were so expensive.
But when I had a second look at them, I couldn’t believe I’d missed how awesome they look! I love their cryptic, sort of mossy pattern. I especially love the ones with lots of green or lots of red, but they’re all so cool and unique. If I ever decide to get into keeping geckos, it will be either chewies or leachies (or both, in a perfect world). Maybe the price on both will have come down by the time I’m ready to get some.
You’ve got some gorgeous geckos! I especially love Maze, I love her reds. Can’t wait to see what you produce!
I keep debating and talking myself out a lizard lol. We have been struggling with the logistics of a cross country move for way too long (it’s fallen apart more than once) and I just can’t add a whole new division of creatures lol. But if we’re dreaming here, I find myself leaning towards gargoyles and chewies.
Y’all are the voice of temptation. I was taught to flee from that! Okay, so I haven’t always excelled in the fleeing department, but I’m at least gonna sidle away. For now.
I also just picked up this little one, again from E.T. Geckos out of my two favorite of her breeders! I’m hoping for a female but I’ll be happy either way. It’s a gorgeous little one regardless, can’t wait to watch it grow.
