Not much happening around here, very exhausted. Fireworks babies are starting to shed again, Fuse was the first. Tried to feed Strobe but Flitter stole his pinky so I’ll have to split them up. Same with Damson & Yuzu. Gonna try and do more with them this weekend if I’m feeling up to it.

More babies have shed, Crackle, Strobe, and Flitter so far. I have to split up Flitter/Strobe and Yuzu/Damson, as the eater siblings are stealing from the non. Took a trip up to Snake Discovery today, picked up a bunch of new hides for some of the adults and a few of the babies. Might try to get some photos if it doesn’t rain all day.

I’m jealous that you can just take “a trip to Snake Discovery.” Also that it may rain all weekend; we’re so dry. Currently we’re on track to have our driest year ever.

Blessing and a curse on living within driving distance, I could spend hours and so much money there. Was surprised I kept the bill within reason, especially since I was buying several hides for adult snakes. Thankfully they do have a rewards program. As for the rain, we’ve needed it for a long time. It’s been dry as heck most of the year here, drought conditions, even. Hopefully some will head your way!

No real updates, still waiting on more sheds.
In other news, managed to save this lovely little lady this evening. Decided to call her Laney, since she was in a lane of traffic. Held onto her for a bit to make sure she was uninjured and otherwise healthy, then released her on the side she was headed to.

Very close, she is a painted turtle! Definitely thought about getting a fishing license so I could keep her, but despite the risks she belongs in the wild.

Yes I know it’s tempting to keep her but she is definitely a “wild” child. So I am aging myself again but I remember years ago when these little painted turtles were sold in what were called “dime stores”. I had several of them as a child on several different occasions and unfortunately none of them ever lived very long.

Sadly every summer here there are several cities who host “turtle races” where wild turtles are caught en masse and then held captive for months, while having to compete in multiple races one day a week. Some cities insist that these turtles are cared for by members of the public, but every year many end up injured or dying. Snake Discovery actually did an exposé video on it.

I completely forgot that some places still do that . Maybe It would have been better if she stayed with you… hopefully Laney lives a long, happy life and doesn’t take part in any of those cruel turtle races.

Thankfully my area does not hold such competitions, and we’re quite far from places that do, so as long as she stays away from predators and the road, she should live out her life unbothered.

I like to believe she’s learned her lesson and will live a long life, laying many eggs and bringing more turtles into the world.

Oh how sad for these sweet little creatures! If that’s not animal abuse I don’t know what is! I’m surprised PETA hasn’t stepped up on this……

Oh they have (though I will never support their org), as well as others, hasn’t stopped the practice. The state only banned commercial turtle trapping this year, I’m hoping that means maybe these events won’t continue, but I’m not holding my breath.

I think I will be taking a mental health break away from here for a few days I’m just feeling really beat down and exhausted, and it hasn’t gotten much better. I’ll likely check DMs & chats, but I feel like it’s good to get away now and again.
