Not a good day

Ohh, I’m sorry to hear that! Poor Cuddles. I wonder what’s going on inside. One thing I know, he’s got the best human he could have. Hugs and prayers.

Almost six months later and I’m still fighting whatever is going on with this guy. He’s now significantly underweight and still having digestion/regurg issues. I’ve moved on to a novel approach to getting weight back on him: voluntary tube feeding. As of tonight he is getting Oxbow Carnivore Critical Care and NutriBAC in an effort to build up his gut biome and provide some more easily digested nutrients. Hopefully this will help him put on much needed weight and work out whatever imbalance is going on.

Fingers crossed that this novel approach helps. Getting the gut flora back in line after the regurges is bound to be helpful.

Have you taken a fecal in for him lately? I know that you feed ft but it’s at least theoretically possible for some parasites to survive freezing and transfer on rare occasion. It’s highly unlikely, but might be worth checking. I had an adult female who wasn’t gaining and occasionally regurging. She was on lifelong ft but her fecal showed parasites. Wormed her and all was well.

Poor little buddy! It’s times like these we wish they could talk so they could tell us how they are feeling! Fingers crossed and hands together he gets better!:crossed_fingers:

I have not yet, but it is very much on the to-do list when I have the chance. Since he was a rescue, I know his life before he came to me was…Not good. Not out of the realm of possibility that he was coping fine with a parasite load before his injury, but that weakened him enough for things to get out of hand.

Okay, so I’ve been voluntary tube feeding this boy for just over three weeks now, and I am so happy to say that he’s finally putting on weight and keeping it on! I was so very, very scared that I was going to have to make the tough decision to put him down, but he showed me he wasn’t giving up just yet. I’m going to keep up with this feeding arrangement until he’s gotten to a goal weight, after which point he will be switched back to f/t mice of a more appropriate size.

I hope to soon be able to post photos of him looking much healthier.

I can’t even begin to describe how happy I was and the relief I felt when I weighed him and he’d finally put on a notable amount. He’s starting to fill back out and look like a corn snake again. Hopefully in the next month or two I will be posting updated photos where he doesn’t look skinny at all!

It’s so cool that you have been able to find a way to help Cuddles put on weight again. Very innovative Fingers crossed that he will keep on making great progress.

Today’s the day! Back to trying appropriately sized feeders again. He got a small/medium mouse. The weather is nice enough that my bedroom is holding temperature without supplemental heat, and he’s gained enough weight that I feel comfortable attempting to get him back on mice alone (plus my critical care expired and I don’t want to wait for a new batch). Fingers crossed he keeps everything down and digests as he should!

Today will be three days post feeding. So far I haven’t noticed any bloating, no regurg, Cuddles is still happy and active as ever. He’s also filling out more, his spine continues to be less prominent by the day. After he poops I will get another weight on him just to make sure we’re still heading in the right direction. Fingers crossed he’ll have surpassed 300g!

It’s official, Cuddles is over 300g again!! He was a big boy before his issues, so he’s still got quite a bit to gain to look healthy, but we’re getting there. Going to see if he can finally take a large mouse again.
