Not-Really-Colubrids: African House Snakes! Discussion and Show-off

Such a lovely girl. Love the pic showing her heart, that’s uber cool.

Chester is so adorable, there’s her little heartbeat visible in that pic! It’s amazing how bold these tiny guys are when they feel explorative.

Good news, guys! Sangfroid has grown! He is now hitting a milestone- 40 grams! His itty bitty self is still an angel when handled but he’s hard to photograph with just a phone because I have no shutter speed and he never stops moving.

(lol excuse the craft closet, Sangfroid lives in his little grow-out enclosure on my desk in the sewing room.)

He is really growing! His eye are so so dark! They match his body! Congratulations on your determination and dedication to that little noodle! :+1::heart:

Sangfroid you beauty!! He’s looking so glossy and lovely. Well done on the milestone – 40, wow! At last weigh-in Chester was 11.5g and I’m having trouble imagining her 4 times as big even though I know she’ll get there. Wow!

Actually, that’s something I’m curious about – has anyone put together an expected growth chart for housies? Or weight guidelines for when to size their food up?

My little Apricot gobbled up a couple of pinks last week so I offered him a small sized fuzzy today and he ate it just fine and he is quite a bit smaller than 40 grams.

There may be feeding charts out there as well as growth charts for house snakes but I just go by how easily and quickly Apricot eats his meal and then bump him up which is what I did today. Even if there are charts, every snake is different imho.

But that’s just me! I am sure there are other opinions….

My little lady is still only tolerating being drop-fed, and only if I leave the room in perfect darkness and tenderly place her snack outside the hide she’s in. She requires room service, I guess. I haven’t had a chance to observe her eating, unfortunately!

Well I have found that just the plain house snake, like the one I have, has a better feeding response for some reason. However as long as Chester Cheeto is eating and growing and by looking at her body size, you can always down the road offer 2 pinks at her hide……

If she doesn’t eat the 2nd pink you have lost a pink but at least you know she is not ready yet……

I haven’t had a house snake (yet) but I should think the general colubrid rule could adopt for these not-really-colubrids since they’ve got colubrid-slender bodies. If the food bump isn’t noticeable 24 hours after feeding, it’s time to move up in meal size. Of course, that supposes that they’ll eat the new meals.

Thanks for the strategies, guys!

I’m hesitant to try and feed to satiation, knowing my BP would absolutely eat herself to obesity if we offered her as much as she’d eat. Maybe that’s less likely with a finicky eater, or with an AHS, but I’m not experienced enough to know for sure. I’ll keep an eye on her food bump, at least; that’s a great little metric!

One of the cutest pics I’ve gotten of this lil worm. Sangfroid didn’t want to stay in his weighing-bag while I cleaned his enclosure out, he wanted to see what I was doing.

He keeps surprising me with how curious he is. I tend to think of him as shy but he likes to know what’s up.

If I’m not mistaken, in general house snakes have a curious nature and will come out to see what’s going on when they see you enter into the room.

He is such a gorgeous colour! Much love to Apricot, and happy new year!

Chester shed for the first time with us last night, a new years gift I suppose. It was whole and perfect, which is really gratifying for a first shed with us!
