AHHHH So excited!! They look great!
Congratulations!! That’s very exciting. Can’t wait to see those little noses. Gotta love this time of year!
Babies!!! Yay congratulations!!!
Oh I can’t wait to hear updates on these guys as they go. I hope the closet works a treat, that’s a creative hack.
Would a similar rack system to what people use for baby corns not work? I guess it might be time to stock up on lock-lid sterilite bins!
I have yet to talk to a breeder who trusts a standard colubrid rack - house snakes are notorious escape artists and can slip out as small as 1/8 of an inch of space. I believe I will definitely go the locking container route.
Oh gosh, I’d be terrified of having such tiny babies in any rack! I keep my hatchling corns in deli cups until after they’ve shed and eaten 2-3× then they go into snap-on, snug lid, food storage containers. And even baby corns are bigger than baby house snakes.
Good luck with them @inspirationexotics!
I remember when I was planning on possibly getting a house snake at an expo, came home with a Texas rat snake, and the seller I got Elmo from had some babies and it was unbelievable how tiny they were. I can’t imagine trying to keep them from escaping.
1/8th of an inch, holy heck – locking bins it is!
Lordy, I’d love to see a newly-hatched housie. They really would be danger noodles, in that they would be literally noodle-sized and probably in danger from everything around them.
I’m really worried, guys- Sangfroid hasn’t taken food for over a month now, and I haven’t seen him for several days and can’t seem to find him in his enclosure…
I keep telling myself he’s gone longer without eating when he was a lot smaller, and he’s probably hiding/temporarily vanished bc he’s gone into Blue. It would be possible for such a small snake to hide somewhere in his bioactive with so much leaf litter and burrowable dirt…
Right?
Have you been poking around gently in his enclosure? It’s not going to hurt him if you find him and he’s in shed. At least you will be able to quit worrying.
It would definitely be possible for such a small snake to hide and I do mean HIDE in the leaf litter. He’s dark in color also, making him even harder to find. Heck, I have a white and bright pink Strawberry Snow Tessera yearling corn with a crazy pattern and bright Halo highlights. He regularly scares the beans out of me by vanishing in his bin. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve torn it apart to find him.
Hopefully Sangfroid is just tucked away preparing for a shed or something. A month without for food is worrisome to humans, but honestly the snakes seem totally find with that. Saying a prayer that you find your baby safe and sound.
The not eating is such a snake move, and so is the hiding, but you have my empathy – both at the same time would freak me out too.
I think it’s good odds he’s just in blue after a breeding-season-adjacent hunger strike, but I understand the worry completely, and if you go poking around in his dirt to see if you can spot him I’m sure he’d forgive you. Do you have any decor he could hide inside? Or loose dirt areas he could tunnel himself under?
Crossing my fingers for the little man to show up asap!
Thanks you guys!
I set up a motion sensing app run camera with “night vision” mode, but I also searched like mad, in case he had got out.
and I must have missed him somehow because tonight I was on my way to the basement to set a heat trap where I caught him before and THERE WAS A TAIL ON THE STAIRS!
I just about dropped everything I was carrying to scoop him up!
He seems to be fine but rather dehydrated, which makes sense. My house is 35-40% and he needs 60%. He was so thirsty he drank right out of the sauce cup of water I offered him right there in my hands. I’d like to imagine he’s relieved to be found.
So if you ever can’t find your snake, keep looking in the enclosure but look elsewhere too!
Wow! I am so happy for you that you found him! How in the world did he get out?
This is just my personal opinion but I think sometimes there might be too much “stuff” in an enclosure for a tiny snake to hide in, therefore when the snake disappears for awhile it is reasonable to think the snake is just hiding in all the stuff, when in fact it has actually flown the coop, so to speak……
Anyhoo, I am thankful for you and your little guy!
So glad you found him! Now you just need to figure out how he escaped so you can make sure to secure whatever little gap he managed to slip through.
Those tiny shoelaces can be so hard to keep contained! I’ll be honest, it’s one of the main things that’s given me pause about getting a house snake. Tiny snakes give me so much anxiety.
Very happy that Mr. Sangfroid is now safely back in his enclosure. Hopefully he’ll be nice and hungry after his adventure and will eat for you!
Oh my gosh I’m so glad he’s found, and safe and sound!! Little man went on a walkabout, oh my gosh.
Any idea how he snuck out?
Thanks guys! I think he squished himself through a cable hole I thought was too small for him- so I’ve secured it and sealed it back up.
Oh, hooray!!! I’m so relieved to hear that you’ve recovered your Sangfroid!! How in the world did you spot him in the stairs? He’s so fortunate to be found. I hope he knows it. Wouldn’t it be grand if he would put together the concepts of how to stay safe and hydrated in his enclosure sans future escapes?
I don’t know if Mr. Sangfroid appreciates his fan club, but as an official fan, I appreciate him. I’m so glad he’s safely back where he belongs.
I’m so glad you found Sangfroid!
I candled the 9 eggs I got today. All now have great veins! Gosh, I can’t wait for them to hatch.
Thank you! It’d be nice if he’d realize I’m trying to feed him. Lil spoiled prince.
I was going to the stairs to go down there and set a heat trap in the basement, which is where he ended up last time, but there was a pearly grey tail draped on the top step and I dropped everything I was holding and scooped him before he could get away.
