You’re very sweet! If I were better with heating and light systems and getting a reliable result, I might think of doing some enclosures and hitting up the annual expo here. It’s still tricky for me to get the right openings for light and temp built in.

I might have to look into which enclosures come with the most flexible options for that. But to be fair, I DO have spaces where I can build that kind of thing, and a decent amount of work experience sculpting with expanding foam, lol. (SO MUCH sculpting with foam) Makes me think…

Thanks very much! I’d love to eventually do some really cinematic looking 2x4s and see what people would be interested, since so many animals do well in those.

Wow! That would be amazing! I was definitely not blessed with imagination! Lol!

Spot the Snek!

His little wee face is in this picture. One eye and a snoot. I think he is loving his new secret garden.

Ok I give up. Where is he?

Here is Marmalade. I have resigned myself to the fact that he will only eat a live mouse once a month. He loves to be buried under lots of foliage and cork bark! Lol! He is definitely my “problem” boy but I love him anyway! Lol!

My two girls are growing really well! Both around the 225-250g mark now. Really excited to breed them next year.

I think I just got really lucky with these girls’ temperaments. They’ve both been great eaters for me, refuse the odd mouse but by and large they’ll take them, if not off tongs than when I leave them in there at night. I try not to feed in shed or too close together to reduce the risk of them refusing, because I wholeheartedly believe that refusing food can become a pattern of behavior by a keeper offering too often and the animal subsequently getting used to refusing.

Yes I do agree about the feeding pattern/habit. I need to weigh Marmalade. It seems he is always shedding so the once a month meal seems to work the best for him. :sunglasses:

That will be a great pairing! I might have to reach out to you when you get babies.

Those of you with experience raising these, particularly B. fuliginosus,
at what size do you move yours from pinkies to fuzzies? I know some snake species are more uh elastic than others.

Well, once of my house snake girls has thrown me a little bit of a curveball! This is Persimmon, she’s about 2.5yrs old and right at 250-260g. I was not planning to pair her or my other female until late this fall to give them plenty of time to grow, but it looks (at least to me, with this being my first experience breeding the species) that she is gravid! She has never been paired with my male and she’s been in my care since she was a juvenile, so definitely no chance of pairing. I’ve talked with a couple of folks on Facebook who said that sometimes virgin females of this species will lay infertile eggs despite never being paired, and also that parthenogenesis is uncommon but not unheard of.

Now, I don’t know for sure that she’s gravid, but I’m noting a few signs. She’s refused meals more often the last couple of months but despite that, the lower 1/3 of her body is noticeably thicker than it was even a month ago, with some scale spread and more bulging near her cloaca. She’s spent a lot more time in her humid hide and is currently going into what I suspect may be her pre-lay shed. When I hold her up gently, I can actually see what looks like egg lumps, and her belly scales are light enough color that I can actually see some whiter sections with darker gaps in between.

IF this is indeed her pre-lay shed, I THINK I’ll be expecting eggs sometime in the next two weeks. I’ll be keeping a close eye on her and I’m also putting together a bigger, darker/more secure egg box for her tonight just to be safe. If she does indeed lay eggs I’m not expecting fertile ones, though that would certainly be cool.

Keep us updated! I am curious about “possible” fertile eggs……

Me too! I’m definitely not expecting fertile ones, but given that my first ever ball python clutch was from a female who retained sperm for 4+ years and my second was a female who decided to partho and proved herself surprise het albino, I seem to attract “weird” breeding stuff…
