@lumpy sorry to hear about your medical troubles. Gosh you’re a stinking trooper to still be doing so much while in that pain.
Not my picture but my sister’s, found this little cutie in the creek behind her house. Copperheads are without a doubt my favorite North American species. Aside from maybe eastern indigos.
Those are all awesome pictures! I especially love the swimming copperhead. They’re such beautiful snakes. We don’t have them where I live, but I’ve seen a few over the years while visiting my mom’s family in Oklahoma. Always a treat to see one of those beauties.
Copperheads are awesome. I have found them to be rather chill, compared to rattlesnakes or cottonmouths. They are also very inquisitive. This is just going on my limited observations when finding them in the woods. I dont think i will ever be good enough to actually get up close and personal.
Went to the Wichita Mountains NWR yesterday with my daughter-in-law Kelsey and 4yo granddaughter Theia. I’m pokey so they were ahead on the trail. They passed to the left of a rock as this guy traveled along its right. I pointed out the snake to make sure everybody knew where everybody was. I backed up and got off the trail out of the snake’s way. It came ahead, then made turn down toward the river pretty much straight in front of me. Very cool experience, very glad everybody went safely home.
That is so awesome, I would have loved to been able to witnesses that. See, I bet your daughter-in-law is super thankful for a snake keeping Grandma who is as awesome as she is snake smart .
While I was backing down the trail to a place where I could step off of it, the snake just kept coming. My daughter in law was also taking video. I almost laughed when she said she there was “a rattlesnake who is apparently hunting my mother in law.” But I was too focused on the snake steadily headed my way.
Wichita Mountains - in Comanche Co, Oklahoma…? That’s my old stomping grounds before I moved to DFW. When I was a biology student, we’d go out there and complete butterfly surveys, bird surveys, etc.
She was on my pool deck sunning herself. I went to grab her and she jumped in my pool, and I got her out. After getting her out I decided to handle her a little bit. Ringnecks are incredible little snakes. I would love to own some in the future, maybe even get a clutch from them. It would definitely be an experience.
Yep, that’s the place! I’ve got a son in the Army, currently in a 9- month long course at Fort Sill. He and his family live in Fletcher. They’re expecting orders over the summer and it’s possible he’ll be stationed there for three more years. Hubby is making noise about moving out there if that’s so.
I don’t know if anyone keeps them honestly. They eat insects and soft bodies like worms. I’m almost 100% sure that I would have to get them wild caught, which poses a challenge. And given that they are so small as babies feeding would be an issue too. I’ve definitely researched them, and have became very fascinated with them.
Oh wow, she’s so beautiful! Love that fiery belly. Great find!
I’ve always loved ringneck snakes. I’d seriously consider keeping them if I could ever find them CBB. I’ve heard some conflicting reports about how WC ringnecks fare in captivity.
