Your reef is looking great Matt. One day🤞
I found a old picture(not mine) of how big some tridacna species of clams can get. The one pictured by the diver would be Tridacna Derasa. I included a few pictures of a couple clams I used to have which were Tridacna Squamosa and Maxima. Clams were definitely my favorite animal. Also pictured is a little zoa garden I was growing on a barebottom tank and a picture of scolymia coral feeding.
Scolys are from outer space! I’m certain of it.
This is the article that really put my old company on the reef keeping map: (it’s in English)
@eorr53. Hope I did this right, here is a reef tank thread.
I’m running a 50x36x26" crystal dynamics tanks. Acropora dominant, lit by 400w x 2 metal halides and some quantapro OG pop led bars for supplementation.
If i set up the 2 frag tanks, I really don’t want to add a grip more energy. With it being in the garage I may just go with some of those highly reflective solar tubes and light the tanks naturally. They wont be frag tanks so much as just shallow reefs. 1 acroproa and the other will be gigantea anemone based (if i do both, 600g is a little daunting after I did the math on the system).
I’ve posted a few picture in this thread. Some cool tanks in here
My tanks been doing well for the last couple months. I moved my center island and it’s pieces elsewhere in the tank to open up that center valley. I want to let the coral fill that in down the line.
Metal halides and supplemental blue LEDS in these tank shots
Wow man, tank looks great. Theres no substitute for halides. I always wanted to try reefbrites, Tullio was a cool guy to chat with at a show. Those lights he makes are impressive.
Im sure ive shared these before but I always liked it when the purple tang would shelter under the montipora. The green montipora with the purple rim was called “jedi mindtrick” montipora and then there was inky, a carribean octopus.
@smite any new additions to the tank?
Oh my goodness those tanks are beautiful and I love love love little Inky!
Thank you! He was pretty cool to watch and feed. I really miss those tanks a lot
That octopus is awesome!
I added a couple feather dusters. One yellow and one Red today. Not a whole lot new in the tank, I’m actually considering selling a few pieces so I can get to my goal of just a couple nice large colonies. Tough to decide what stays and what goes though! I think I got a little more time before I really have to start doing that.
Feather dusters are awesome, such cool worms. Thats always a tough decision to make, what stays and what goes. My choices usually were made depending on color and how much real estate said coral needed and how aggressive it was towards other corals in acquiring that real estate. No matter the choice though, i usually missed it once it was gone. Lol.
That octopus was fascinating to watch, very intelligent and curious. Still never got to try cuttle fish but maybe one day…
Loved this picture under daylight spectrum without blues, looks like I’m diving. Thats a crocea clam, utter chaos palythoa, and a nice chalice colony
Omg that octopus is beyond adorable, I’m in love! Octopuses are my all-time favourite animal. If it weren’t for their tragically short lifespans, I’d consider braving the complexities of saltwater tank keeping just to have one of my very own.
They are really cool, the carribean octopus is really neat. There are species that live longer but get really big and are a lot of work. Maybe one day I’ll start another reef tank but for now I just help others with their tanks and builds.
Octopuses in general just got shafted by evolution in the lifespan department. Most of the ones that stay at a reasonable size for a tank in an average home only live a year or two (or less), and even the unreasonably large species only get a few extra years.
I’ll just content myself with playing with them in tidepools. It’s not uncommon to find California two-spotted octopus in the tidepools around here.
