Shipping questions

Im planning on shipping an adult Boa from Oregon tomorrow (temp highs 50’s - lows 40’s) to NY (temp highs 50’s - lows 40’s). The package will be going to the Memphis hub and the temps there are mid to high 80’s. I can’t use a heat pack because the snake might have a delay in Memphis and could cook, but im concerned it might get too cold in other states like mine and NY. Would I be able to just use a phase pack in its liquid stage all by itself without a heat pack? Or, should I wait until Wednesday to ship when it will be 60’s in NY and not have to worry about a heat pack? It will still be 50s and low 40s in my state when im shipping it out. If i waited until Wednesday and didnt use a heat pack, would i still use a liquid phase pack?

If there should be a delay in Memphis, the box with your boa will be kept in a temperature controlled environment until it is loaded onto the next plane so you should be fine without a heat or phase pack.

However you will get other opinions and someone will correct me if I am giving you erroneous advice……

It is better to lean towards the cooler side when in a situation like that with shipping.
Personally I like to wait until the weather is a bit warmer to ship so I don’t have to play the guessing games or risk the animal in any way.

The phase pack should do it’s best to regulate the temps as evenly as possible. With an adult boa you may want to add at least 2 unless it is a larger style than the ones I usually see in 12x9x6 shipments.

I would say delay. I have never had anyone complain when I tell them I just want to make sure the animal gets to them as smoothly as possible without risks. There are some fussy people out there and hopefully this won’t be one of them.

Thank you. This customer is being pretty particular due to going on vacation on the 25th and having had to wait a week already. I too agree that cooler is better. Its only going to get hotter in Memphis and the snake is a big boy! Hes got insulation on top, bottom, and all sides and will have a good bed of aspen around him.

If I took a guess I would say the phase pack is 3x5, its from Pangea. Hes going to be in a 16x12x6 box. Big boy, easily 4’!

Thank you! Ive decided to throw a liquid (not solid) pack in there for good measure. Like the person below said, it prolly wouldnt hurt to use 2.

I can’t speak about boas’ temperature tolerance, but I have safely shipped a lot of corn snakes using phase packs without heat/cool packs. Remember that the goal for safe shipping temperatures inside the box is to keep them from getting too cold. It’s not actually to keep them warm. There’s more danger from overheating than there is from becoming cooler.

Hopefully your snake will get safely and promptly where it’s going. It sounds like it should.

Well hes already in Memphis and its only 56 there right now. I feel like i should have put a heat pack in. But again, rather cold than hot. And thankfully its not too cold.

He’s not outside though. He’s protected inside until his box gets loaded onto the plane. As @armiyana said, better a bit cool than a bit hot……

@caron is right.
Insulated box with the phase packs and packing materials should do good. Keep him insulated and the phase packs will help try to keep temps even. Plus his size is nothing to sneeze at.

It’s not going to instantly drop his box temps. Still will take a bit of time.

I do always worry about my little guys when I send them off though so I totally get the nerves.

Don’t panic yet. The buyer may have had someone else pick him up for whatever reason. Which is interesting that this was allowed because the hub had to go by whatever name is on the box. But I am sure there are exceptions.

I’m sure everything is fine……

Have you tried contacting the buyer?
