Show off your Isopods!

I say get both! Dairy cows are definitely one of my favorites.

I agree with @bughunter07

A lot of the species I keep really don’t have a purpose other than that I like them haha

@madelines_morphs me too :joy:

I only have around 5 kinds that have a purpose as a clean up crew. All others are really just pets.

@erie-herps Both is obviously the correct answer :joy:

@bughunter07 Yes haha my dad is so confused about why I’m keeping all of the these “useless bugs” haha

Yep. I started off so subtle with two types (Dairy cow and zebra) and now have almost 30 :joy: The majority of which I payed over $5 each bug.

:cow: :cow2: all the way

They’ve actually gone a bit made in the Crestie vivs

There’s supposed to be a purpose for isopods? I’ll get both, I just need to find them (and there’s an expo Sunday with an isopod vendor, lol).

I finally decided to downgrade the duckie enclosure. It looks like I have around 4-5 blonde duckies and 2 rubber duckies. My friend did tell me that there could be some rubber duckies floating around in the enclosure so I’m totally fine with that.
It does save me money now I don’t have to buy rubber duckies :joy:

I also found a few mancae not entirely sure if they’re duckies yet or if they are some other species that happened to make their way into the enclosure. I guess we’ll find out eventually!

Nice! Hopefully you have some good success with them!

I haven’t gotten any babies from mine yet  I have heard they can take a year to start breeding so hopefully your babies are duckies and you can save a year of waiting :joy:

I’m really really hoping!

I’ve said it before and I’ll probably end up saying it again :joy: but my friend stopped by the other day and dropped these cuties off.

Awesome pictures, everyone! I’d like to get into keeping isopods at some point, and this thread has given me some ideas on which species tickle my fancy. I especially love the various “duckie” morphs. They’re so cute!

I think I like isopods because they’re like modern-day trilobites. I loved collecting trilobite fossils as a kid and amassed a considerable collection. Isopods are like those fossils come to life.

When I was a kid, I loved catching and playing with the isopods I’d find while helping my mom in her garden. As I recall, there were several different species. Every now and then I’d find one that was the brightest, most beautiful blueish purple. They were so bright and vibrant it was almost unreal. Only later did I learn that that gorgeous colour was actually the result of them being afflicted with a fatal disease. :frowning:

That is awesome! There are some isopods that definitely take the trilobite look to an extreme. One of my favorites is P. expansus. They are absolute stunners :exploding_head:

My panda kings finally got here yesterday!

Those are so gorgeous!

Really they all look like trilobites, since there were many different kinds of trilobites. Some trilobites could even roll into a ball, just like some modern isopods!

There were over 20,000 species of known trilobites and they were around for a loooooong time, so there were all sorts in various shapes and sizes. Many bear a really striking resemblance to various species of modern isopods. It’s super cool.

Modern isopods aren’t really that closely related to trilobites (horseshoe crabs are usually cited as trilobites’ closest living relative), besides them both being arthropods, but at least superficially, they really do look similar.

Here are some isopods that we started breeding and selling since last time I posted on this thread.

Armadillidium peraccae. These are known as the Blue-Gray Isopod. We just brought these onto the market last week. These are a super easy species with an unusual color.

Cubaris murina “Papaya.” I’ve been told that this is actually a form of Albinism. I often recommend this species to first time Cubaris keepers.

Cubaris sp “Panda King.” This is the second new-to-us Cubaris species that we put forth this year.

We have a ton more new Armadillidium, Cubars and Porcellio projects in the works. We also just bought our first Thai Spiky Isopods and we can’t wait for them to arrive.

I love A. peraccae! Even though they are simple they have always been one of my favorites.

I’ve always seen them called “bumpy” but blue-grey sounds better lol.

Nice!

Wow, Thai-Spikey is hardcore :muscle: Congratulations on the new-arrivals! Really hope they do well for you!

I also suggest C. murina to lots of new keepers. They are super simple, and new variations are coming so fast :grinning:

I was looking at buying A. peraccae a while back but decided on some others instead. I heard they produce like wildfire.

The price point on the Thai Spiky is not as prohibitive as it once was. They have come down to about the same price as a high-end Cubaris.
