It does doesn’t it!
It is SOOOOOO CUTE!! Painfully cute. Adorably cute. : 3 He’s got this face.
If you ever decide you want to get another snake species, I’d highly recommend considering a sand boa. They tick most of the boxes I’ve seen you mention: low maintenance, docile, and small adult size. They’re thicker-bodied than a house snake, but they’re similar in length. Plus they’re just freaking adorable, and there’s lots of colour options to choose from, especially for the Kenyans.
Granted, I freely admit to being biased, but I think sand boas are a great option for anyone wanting a snake on the smaller side.
In my opinion they are the best beginner snake. They are super easy and super rewarding. The only thing that I don’t like about them is that they aren’t really a display animal and they aren’t out much, but other than that they are perfect. And whether they hide or are out depends on a lot of different factors, mainly the individual snake.
Im still crushing hard on sand boas im sure eventually i pick one or 2 up, probably after i get to move. Most of my animals are for me, not display as they all hide 99% of the time. My kitty is the only animal that doesn’t hide most of its life, however she does bully me into making her pillow forts so she’s a hider too!. Come to think of it im kinda of hider as well i only leave my apartment when i need to, but with the pandemic and ability to order everything online i really rarely need to go out.
Yeah, since they’re fossorial, they’re generally not the best display animal, but my girl is actually out above the substrate pretty often. I’ve heard that adults tend to spend less time burrowed than babies/juveniles, but as you said, a lot of it likely depends on the individual snake.
I agree that they’re a great beginner snake, or just a great choice for anyone who wants a snake on the smaller end of the size spectrum. My girl is large by KSB standards, and she’s still only about 34-35" long. Plus their husbandry needs are pretty easy and simple, they’re typically good eaters, and they’re adorable.
I definitely think you’d enjoy having a sand boa or two, they’re really wonderful snakes!
Im sure i would i been wanting one for quite a number of years when maybe they weren’t as popular and before they had morphs.
I definitely don’t mind not having showy animals they are much easier to care for generally and then i don’t have guests who might bug them.
I remember looking at KBS a long time ago and the sales people tried to talk me out of them they were like “why you want one of them? they just hide all day”
The truth is, most snakes tend to hide a lot. There are certain species and certain individuals that are more active and out on display more than others, but many species common in the pet trade are ambush predators by nature, which means their natural instincts are to conceal themselves and wait for prey to wander by. My sand boa is out and about more than my blood python, or my old roommate’s ball python. She’s certainly more active in her enclosure. When I was using sand as her substrate (that’s how she was given to me), I’d hear her burrowing through the sand all the time. Now that she’s on aspen, I don’t hear her moving around, but I can still tell she moves around her enclosure quite a bit, and I see her out on display at least several times a week.
So yeah, don’t be deterred by people who claim that having a sand boa is “like taking care of an empty terrarium.” They’re nocturnal burrowers, sure, but that doesn’t mean you never see them. How often they come out can vary by age and individual, but they’re more active than a lot of other popular species, I feel.
Yeah, besides it wasn’t good of the sales person to talk themselves out of a sale. I definitely plan on getting 1 maybe 2 by years end.
Me needing to see them or even handle them is not my primary concern, i get my hugs from my kitty, my other animals is because i find them fascinating, im also kinda of a night owl as i don’t sleep well because of PTSD so i do get rewarded with watching my animals. I think people think of the visible animals such as dogs, cats fish so they expect the same from my animal choices. My animals hide because they mostly live in hot areas so they are nocturnal plus they are also every bit both predators and prey. The people who talk about “empty tank” really only are there for short moments and mostly in the day. I see my spiders and scorpions all the time, plus i know where they hide.
She looks so awesome in a wild animal look to her ( in a good way)
Phoebe, my adult female KSB, somehow felt it necessary to contort herself into an upsidedown pretzel to swallow her mouse last night. It was the silliest thing I’ve seen in a long time, the front third or so of her body was totally belly-up. She only righted herself once she’d swallowed the hind feet and only the tail was left sticking out of her mouth.
I wish I’d taken a picture…although I guess I wouldn’t be able to post it here even if I had, since depictions of feedings are discouraged. Still, I thought I’d share anyway. Anyone else have a sand boa who eats in a needlessly complicated way?
My boy snow does silly things when he is feeding too! I wish i could have seen your baby feeding. Its sad that we get a natural course of life used against us as every animal has to eat.
My new adopted pet sandbox “Mr.Moo” yeah I should have gotten a pic before I released him into his temporary housing. Local herpetological society was doing an adoption event at a pet shop near me. He was too cute not to bring home. (And I’m hopefully giving him a happier environment) He’s cute as a button. Maybe a foot / 14 inches long. Brown and white. (Hence the Mr. Moo) can’t wait to post some actual pics when I catch him out. Already in love with these little guys
(Sorry about the crummy glass…. It’s calcium deposits that I need to remove)
He is adorable
, i love the name too.
Don’t worry i have a living room full of “empty” enclosures
.
Typical question “why do you have so many glass tanks with nothing but sand and some wood an stuff?”
Lol. My husband was teasing me and asked what my fixation on animals that “bury themselves” is. (I got like half a dozen hognoses) I just can’t say no to derpy cute little snake faces. even if they aren’t out and about all the time.
My top favorite snakes rosy boas, sand boas and hog noses because they are all too cute i plan on getting some sand boas and hogs in the near future. Who can resist the cutest snake face of the hognose?
I don’t mind the hiders, im a bit of one myself
Yeah I love Rosie’s too. Been wanting a sand boa but haven’t been actively shopping for one yet so it kinda worked out for Mr. Moo and I. He needed a home and I wanted a sand boa. Hoggies are great too. I love all mine. Have yet to get a Rosie though. Maybe if I run across another adopt situation I’ll pick one up
Also totally relate to the hiding part. Actually said the same to the husband. My happy place is at home with him and our pets. I’m not like a super outgoing/wants to be out and about all the time. I prefer to leave when I have to then come back as soon as I can
