I did pair her with Chipmunk for a few hours a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t see any interest so pulled him same day. She’s still been eating so I’m guessing she’s either ovulating or going to lay a batch of slugs, time will tell.
It will indeed. I’ve got some girls who, I’m pretty sure, would eat right up until the minute they laid eggs. Maybe even while laying, lol. Guess you’ll know before too much time passes, anyhow.
Considering how my year has gone up until now, I’m ready for anything, lol. I had originally started the year with two planned clutches, had everything go wrong with Celia. Then of course the clutch that started this thread, where I found out the male I’d intended for Sienna didn’t get the job done (and Sienna’s surprise hets), so I had to pivot there as well. It’s been a rollercoaster, at this point if I expect slugs, watch Azula end up laying a fertile clutch.
Update post-errand run: I got the sheds sent out for testing. In a couple of weeks I’ll do a gender reveal post for kicks and giggles. Really hoping that the three I want to hold back are all female. These babies are all incredibly well mannered and handleable, definitely got their personalities from dad and they’d be great additions to my project he’s part of.
As for Ms. Azula, I put a lay box in with her juuuust in case. I checked and her last shed was 11 days ago, so if that was a pre-lay, could be any day now. I’m so annoyed with myself for not keeping a sharper eye on her, but everyone gets busy, that’s what records are for, thank goodness.
You have certainly had a heck of year already, whatever else happens! I won’t be at all surprised if you get more babies. Because some years be like that.
Ain’t that true! I wouldn’t be too upset with more babies, that’s for sure. Azula seems to be quite content in the lay box, did a lot of enclosure roaming today before settling down in there for the night, it seems. I’m not planning to get my hopes up too high, but who knows.
No updates on anyone just yet, but exciting news! Was doing my usual daily browse of new listings on MM today and managed to snag a female with genes relevant to both my projects who is going to be RTB this next season! Between that and the possible trade I have lined up, it means I won’t have to delay my Palmetto project until 2024 like I thought I would.
Congratulations on the happy pickups! I love snake-shopping, even vicariously!
At least here my squealing is understood, my poor stepfather had to deal with my excited ramblings. This was such a great turn of events, I can now really narrow down which of the babies from this clutch I plan to keep and the rest can go, since I’ll have at least three clutches planned for next year with more suitable genetics.
Can we look again everyone.
She has a SKULL on her head!!!
I was waiting to see if anyone else would notice this! Looks like she’s got a little horned/flaming demon skull, and the scaleless patches really accentuate it. She’s on the very short list for holdbacks, for multiple reasons.
It’s amazing, shes one I’d keep too
Figured I’d give everyone a chance to vote on the genders of the hatchlings:

Anyone with a * is on the holdback short list.
Is Azula doing anything maternal ?
Nothing maternal yet, aside being rather bumpy. I’m wondering if she’s ovulating, my male Japanese rat snake, who has not given a hoot all year, is suddenly chasing his own tail again, and he usually only does this if I have ovulating females.
Small update on Leaky. It is all good news so don’t worry. She has shed 2x and eaten twice for me. She is growing really fast lol .
My goodness! She really is just growing like a weed, though I should not be surprised based on how she’s been since hatching. I’m so happy to hear that she’s thriving.
Yes, she has been nothing short of perfection. Thank you .
Well Azula remains a mystery. Still eating, still bumpy, has been under her water dish hide a lot recently. Re-fluffed her lay box today just in case. She’s 17 days post shed, and she seems very sausage-like. I guess I just will have to keep watch for now.
Maybe she’s in the process of reabsorbing. Maybe she’s just chonky. Lol. Guess time will tell.
