Whoops! Guess I've started my 2026 season

I’ve had a pair of Checkered garters needing shed tested, but they decided that was silly talk and instead chose to prove themselves out as a 1.1 pair. This is Itt (Amel female) and Thing (wild type male), and they may possibly have some little snakelets coming in a few months.

Heck, they knew what sex they were! Lol Congratulations or at least potential congratulations to you all. How long do you think it might be before you can tell if Itt is in the family way?

That they did, and they weren’t afraid to share that information when the time was right! :joy: From what I’ve heard, they can start showing signs around 4-6 weeks in. She’s a thick girl, but still small, so I’m hoping it will be pretty obvious one way or the other. I did separate them, so if it ends up she’s not gravid, I can grow her out a bit more before intentionally breeding them.

I love Thing’s drippy makeup. He’s a cutie.

I guess at least they decided to make sure you knew at least… Instead of surprise babies everywhere in a few weeks. Lol

I knew my 10 yo son was serious about this snake thing when he caught garters and wanted to keep them. I gave him a week and then they had to go back to nature. In just that week (and all the weeks after) he continued to earn himself the reputation as the “snake catcher,” and got calls from all the neighbors to help them when they found snakes. Haha. We’ve been in corns since, but I sure do love garters.

Can’t wait to see snakelets soon! Be sure to share!

He sounds very much like myself as a youngster. I started out catching garters. My parents would get calls from summer camp saying I was catching snakes and had been bitten. They were not amused. Obviously we all know how that turned out!

If she does indeed have some, I will most definitely be sharing a ton of photos. I love baby garters, their heads end up looking like watermelon seeds they’re so small!

Based on the way Itt is looking these days, it’s very likely there will be baby garters arriving soon. It has been 74 days since I first saw them lock and her lower third is very chunky.

Exciting to hear updates, Jess! Is this the only clutch you have this year?

With a little luck it won’t be. I’m experimentally pairing two of my hognose girls this year as well.

Do garters produce live babies?

They do! They’re ovoviviparous. Gonna be a whole new experience for me.

Can’t wait to see pics! You’ll have to do video of the live birth

If I’m around and she’s not hidden, I will do my best. I think I may clean the enclosure tomorrow just so everything is nice for baby time.

Oh my gosh live birth is so cool! When my big boa had her “accidental” litter the babies were so slippery I had a tough time removing them from the enclosure. Plus it didn’t help that she was trying to eat my face the whole time!
