My first ever clutch

Im just a little worried about bambam since they are the runt and when I last weighed them they were 3g.

That’s a weight drop, but as long as the baby seems active I would try not to worry too much. They all drop a little bit of weight after hatching before their first meal. They’re born extremely well hydrated, and there’s a bit of so-called water weight which always melts away. There’s been a lot going on in Bambam’s world since it first peeked out of its egg. Sometimes they take a while to decide its okay to eat. I know, it’s worrisome when they refuse. It is very frustrating, and when it’s your first clutch it’s even more stressful. I only had one survivor in my first clutch and she was very stubborn about refusing to eat, too. She eventually did, thank God. (That was actually Dazzler, mother of the “window” eggs whose babies are shedding now.)

Let’s hope Bambam eats overnight. If not, I’d leave the baby totally alone for another 3-4 days and try again with another pinky head, with some scenting. But let’s hope overnight works!

How would I go about scenting the pinky head? I dont have any access to a lizard so im not sure if id be able to scent it.

I’ve heard of people scenting with things like tuna juice, egg, chicken fat…Doesn’t necessarily have to be a lizard.

Ah ok I might give one of them a try then! Thanks!

That’s great news! 1 down 1 to go! Hopefully the little one will follow his sibling soon!!:+1:

Also bologna, bacon grease, chicken soup, salmon, cat/dog food… all kinds of things that corn snakes wouldn’t even encounter in the wild, never mind be able to eat. Then there’s the “zombie dance,” where you wiggle the intended meal worth tweezers or forceps to simulate moving pretty; this tempts some to strike. It can take several tries before you find the combination of factors which finally temps a baby to eat. Be encouraged, there are so many tools in the toolbox. Something is almost sure to work.

If bambam doesnt eat ill offer them again on friday and try one of those methods. Ill also be offering pebbles again so hopefully they continue and eat their second meal!

Hey @shadowspiderjack Hooray for Pebbles! Wasn’t she hatched out first? If that’s the case, then it makes sense that she would eat first. Bam Bam should be next up! Batter up!

And btw, you have done a tremendous job with your very first clutch! You really have something to be proud of!!!:+1::heart:

Thanks! However bambam was the first to hatch and shed despite being a run which was quite supprising! Although when i looked inside their egg their was what looked like some solidified yolk. It looked all jelly like and thick. It was also where the staining/mark on their egg was so maybe this is the reason they are smaller?

I honestly @shadowspiderjack can’t even give you an uneducated guess because I have no experience with egg hatching. But nature can do very odd things! Little double B will come through for you soon I am sure!

Maybe? It’s really hard to say. Sometimes eggs are less than ideal and the babies are smaller at hatching because of that, but they catch up and grow into normally sized snakes. Bambam will hopefully do just that.

Just decided to check up on them both.

Pebbles has a nice full belly

But bambam would rather climb through the holes in the log

They have gone inside the log with the food now so hopefully they finally decide to eat it!

Pebbles looks fantastic with that full belly! Did Bambam decide to eat?

no sadly they still haven’t eaten. ill leave the pinky head in there for a full 24hrs but it doesnt seem likely that they are going to eat it.

I’m sorry to hear that. Do you have something small, like a deli cup or a small yogurt container? If not, I recommend that you procure something like that and try Bambam in it with nothing but his meal to think about. No climbing logs for distraction, nothing to do but eat for entertainment. That is often helpful.

that was what I was doing before but you were also saying the constant moving from their main tub to the smaller one could have been a reason they weren’t eating. And after offering them in their main tubs pebbles ate.

Sorry for the confusion. I was concerned about all the moving around they were doing, and the changes within their bins. Changes of any kind, repeated checking while they’re supposed to be eating, those things can put a shy baby off eating. Clearly what you did worked for Pebbles. That’s fantastic! If you want to try feeding in the bin again with Bambam, maybe next time will be the charm. I was just thinking you might switch back to putting him in a deli since he’s not eaten yet.

If you want to go that route, you can put the deli in his bin right away. He will accept it as part of his home, and then when you confine him in it at mealtime, it’s not a strange place for him. I’ve had success with some doing that.

Yeah hopefully they eat on the next feeing. Im very glad that pebbles has started eating, now I just need to get bambam to start eating!

You’re halfway there. Don’t let your concern over getting the rest of the way there cause to to forget to celebrate! I know I’m guilty of that tendency.
