Im sorry i thought id try to help. Hope your gecko gets over whatever is going on.
Thankyou
If anyone knows what it means when a crestie sticks their tongue out like I described or witnessed it with one of there cresties and knows why please let me know…Thankyou!
Usually licking their eyes, or just sensing where they are
Yeah, it’s either scenting what around them or thirsty. What’s the humidity levels?
My Geckos do it when I’m holding them and when I’ve just sprayed. Esp new Cresties
Definitely not licking eyes it was like a snake he would stick it straight out and back in for like maybe an hour? It’s quit odd
Does that mean he is thirsty all the time? Becuase it’s constant not like every few hours it’s like every time he is awake
Ya he also does it when I am holding him
Also not sure of the humidity levels but I spray his tank twice a day carful to get it fully wet
You really need to know the humidity levels as it could be him thirsty.
Cresties rely on humidity. It’s VERY important.
How do you monitor humidity?
Well I was thinking I needed a humid gauge (sorry not sure how you spell) and contacted the breeder before we got him the breeder said it wasn’t necessary and just monitoring how much we mist is adequate enough, he said that in the morning and night mist until everything in the terrarium is wet and that is good. Well that is what I have been doing…I hope that has been enough if you think I should get a humidity gauge I will
What i return from my vacation I will send a vid of how much I usually mist
That’s something you would have to decide on. Without seeing pics of the enclosure it the gecko, I couldn’t say if he seemed dehydrated or not.
He may just like to scent things.
I don’t have humidity gauges in every enclosure, but I do have them in a few so I can keep an eye for when humidity levels drops
I’d personally recommend having a hygrometer (humidity guage) for any animal that requires moderate to high humidity (like a crestie). They’re inexpensive, they’re easy to install and use, and it takes the guesswork out of managing your gecko’s environment. You can even get devices that measure both temperature and humidity with a single probe and display. Depending on the climate where you live, it’s likely that the ambient humidity in your home will fluctuate to some degree with changes in weather, seasons, etc. If you’re monitoring the humidity in the enclosure, you may discover that there are times when you don’t need to mist as often, or there may be times when you need to mist more often. Knowing the actual humidity in the enclosure will ensure you can keep his levels where they need to be regardless of climate variables.
It is, of course, up to you, but given how easy hygrometers are to use and how inexpensive they are (I think I paid like $12 for mine, and you can get them even cheaper), I don’t think there’s any reason not to use one. Just be sure to get a digital one (they’ll usually have a probe on a wire connected to a digital display box, you put the probe inside the enclosure and keep the display box outside the enclosure), not the analog type with the dial. The analog ones aren’t very accurate, the digital ones are much more accurate (and also easier to read).
ZooMed and Vivarium Electronics both make good, inexpensive digital hygrometer/thermometer units. I prefer the VE one, mainly because it only has a single probe, whereas the ZooMed unit has two probes (one for temperature and one for humidity). But they both work well and can be purchased for under $20.
Creating a false bottom and having a subrate barrier will also help retain the humidity. Getting an automatic mister will help you keep consistent moisture.
Tysm I will definitely buy one as soon as I can as I agree with you that it is important be able to know the level of humidity and thanks for the suggestions
Thankyou I will look into that’s as well
Crested geckos like snakes have a Jacobson’s organ that they use to process smells. So most likely he’s just smelling his surroundings.
Good to know Thankyou, I will keep a close eye on him
Hello so I went on Amazon and looked for both the zoo med and vivarium electronics and just want to make sure I got the right products so I took some screen shots and would love to have your verification also because what I think is the vivarium electrons one doesn’t have the brand name so I don’t really know so just wanted to make sure.
I just use these right here.
I just ordered these because of the number of enclosures i have but i don’t know yet how good they are or how accurate. I have 2 analog display and they are not very accurate not even compared to each other as both give different readings. Hopefully these will work but at 15 for 6 i don’t know.
