Lunch time update. She’s up to 10 that I can count with another 6-7 still on the way it looks.

They all “look” viable based on the shell color and consistency.

Not sure how I missed your response until now, but I just saw it. I know some guys that have theirs do it no matter how much they try not to and others it seems like have no issue with it.

I wonder if it comes down to the individual snake and less about environmental/resource factors? Like some of them are just genetically predisposed to produce more offspring/clutches each year.

The way this first clutch is shaping up I may be up to my eyeballs in baby bulls if any of these girls double clutches on me. :joy:

I assume genetics must play a heavy role in whether or not they double clutch regardless of what we do in terms of husbandry, as long as it’s adequate. Corns, at least, have been bred in captivity in large numbers for decades. Seems likely that bigger collections which were trying to maximize numbers and making outsized contributions to the gene pool probably did some selecting based upon this.

Maybe in nature conditions need to be more specific for this to happen. I’m not aware of any actual scientific studies on the topic. Conducting one would be quite a challenge. Can’t exactly ask them. Lol.

I can think of worse problems. :joy:

Wow! She laid 20 eggs total. They all appear viable when being candled. I was expecting maybe 12 since she is a first time mama. 20!!!

Mom appears to be doing well all things considered. She is very thin but is alert and responsive. She is currently resting on the heat in her cage. I’ll offer her a small meal tomorrow.

Way to go momma indeed! She seemed a little more with it this morning after resting over night. She still looked skinny but the really deflated look had subsided some. Gonna give her a small rat tonight.

@caryl After laying 20 eggs yesterday she better not double clutch! :grimacing:

Well, it happened again. My hybino finally laid today. She dropped 29 eggs! 26 look good with three duds. Mama is doing very well considering she probably just birthed half her body weight!

My black pine began laying this evening as well. As of this writing she had laid 8 with one more in the pipeline.

These are big eggs! I’ll share more pics in another post.

WOW and WOW and WOW again!! His congratulations to all the parents and to you, @eorr53 ! Those eggs all look huge and healthy. You’re going to be so must when these all hatch. Hopefully every one of them will and you won’t get the dreaded double or you’re going to be buried in babies!

Oh my goodness Eric! Congratulations to momma and you! That’s incredible!:clap::clap:

Thanks @caryl! I’m still kind shocked and stunned by today. This is my first season breeding snakes and to have it begin like this is just something I’m not used to. It’s pretty great to see all the hard work pay off. I love doing this.

The black pine is finished. Nine big ones! Mama seems to be doing alright. I left her in the lay box to rest over night after I removed the eggs.

All the eggs candled good and they’re huge. Believe it or not Louisiana Pine eggs are even bigger!

I got a video of the egg deposition. You can view it on my IG. I had to speed it up because it almost 3-minutes long.

Congratulations on all the eggs!!! Those pine eggs certainly are huge, mama must feel great after pushing those out! (She looks like a luxury ribbon the way she’s laying  ).

When do you roughly expect them to hatch? July babies would be awesome!

Would being buried in snake babies really be a bad thing? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
