Reptile Morph Art Series

So glad I could be an inspiration! Slight correction, I hate to be pedantic, but it was meant to be a dromaeosaurid preening. But I’m so glad I could inspire you, that actually makes me immensely happy. And an absolutely gorgeous choice of color inspiration you chose

Ah yeah, I almost even wrote dromaeosaurid instead of raptor but went with the generic, darn! :joy:
Not to compare 2 different styles, but I am genuinely so blown away by yours. I would SO love if you happened to post more sketches here, and I’m sure everyone else would agree!

Will do  I’m kinda inconsistent with when I get around to drawing, but when I do make some things, I’ll post it on here. I’ll definitely post my sauropod drawing when I get around to finishing it

Yes please! I know we’d all love to see it :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’ve been meaning to ask this, but why do you shade it in purple? lol I don’t know why but my mind has always wanted to ask :joy::rofl:.

Like the actual multiply layer in purple for the shading effect? Using dark purples or blues for shaping instead of blacks creates a more organic looking effect, its some weird color theory thing.
If you want a cartoonish or flat style you can shade with black, which is totally valid and honestly probably would work with this style, I’ve just been told shading with black is a cardinal sin :joy: :joy:

Hmm…interesting. Thank you for the explanation

I’m absolutely not procrastinating studying for this stats exam…never

Here’s a saruoposeidon (the current tallest living animal - name means ‘Lizard of the Earthquake God’) based on a deep breath Cypress Cinnamon Mojave Clown Enchi Ball python whew

And a Dreadnoughtus (‘fears nothing’) based on a T- Albino Blood Python. I’ve drawn a rearing sauropod twice before, but once was a zombie dino, and the other was in a defense posture, so I tried to go for a show-off display pose for sexual selection this time.

I find sauropods weirdly hard to draw, but I am VERY pleased with both of these!

You should be VERY VERY PLEASED!!! These are terrific!! I have some skills, but this would never be one of them. Thank you for sharing! :bouquet:

My Master’s experiment wraps up this week, so from today until Wednesday I have 6 hours in the lab each day while everyone else is on Fall Break (like EVERYONE…the whole campus is empty), so art is helping me relax!

Here is a Lythronax (‘gore king’) - a relatively newly described tyrannosaur! Based on a super pastel freeway ball python. I don’t usually work with cool or undersaturated colors, and this has both so it was a challenge!

Next is a Nasutoceratops (‘big nose horned face’) and I wanted to lean into a bullish stance. Lowered head, raised tail, an implied pawing motion, I wanted to create the sense of a bull about to charge. Ofc I had to use a bullsnake for this - Kingsville Red morph. I’m so pleased with this one!

I should note that I struggle with proportions for both tyrannosaurids and ceratopsians, so for both of these pieces I used reference images from some (relatively) accurate models. It would be great if I could use my own models to rotate and add lighting as I want but…really good dinosaur models are $50+ :smiling_face_with_tear: Lythronax is from PNSO, nasutoceratops is from Huarong (Haolonggood):

And best of luck in wrapping before Fall Bean!

Here’s a Kosmoceratops (‘ornate horned face’) based on a Leopard YB G Stripe ball python (dbl het clown, DG). I, again, used a model for sale for some proportion references, which is found below (HAOLONGGOOD 1:35 Scale Kosmoceratops Model).

Also I was thinking about what @lumpy asked earlier about using purples as the shadow colors, and I realized I was taught that information in relation to traditional art like watercolors and oil paints, where black is rich and stiff, and you can’t adjust that easily, so its better to use softer colors to find realism…well with digital art you CAN adjust those lighting elements, so I did both purple (bottom) and black (top)…and I’m embarassed to say I like the black better! Its easy to forget that rules in traditional art don’t always apply to the crazy manipulation available in digitale art

I like both the black and the purple! Those are very cool renditions of a totally bodacious, insanely, astonishingly complicated looking creature! Nice job, er, jobs!!

Thank you! Isn’t it wild that an animal that looks like THAT once existed on this planet??? Blows my mind every time.
