The Royal Nest Reptiles - 2023 Season

It truly is amazing how much energy they expend in the laying process! Just think if we let them maternally incubate that would be another 60 days of not eating at least! Gives you a sense of how much animals in nature go through for the next generations to come into this world! Nice job again!

(Scale reads 482 grams, it’s hard to see!)

Helena surprised me by laying a day earlier than her due date. She did a good job though! Clutch # 4 in the incubator.

4 good eggs, and 1 boob egg that candled with the same weird ring Kat’s two did.
Weirdly enough every boob egg I’ve gotten in my clutches so far has always been infertile!

Now Charlie is last, hasn’t even had her prelay shed so we’ll be waiting awhile still. :joy:

Great looking clutch! Large eggs, even the boob egg doesn’t look bad! Hope it hatches for you!

For some reason despite what looked like an ovulation, Charlie ate today. She looked like she was expecting food for some reason, so I offered and she took!

From what I could find on Google it isn’t entirely unheard of for females to still eat even after ovulation, but still unusual.

Anyone else have any experiences with that?

I have heard occasionally they will take food after ovulation, some keepers used to offer smaller then usual food items to the female thinking they would have more substance to go through the laying process. Of course this isn’t necessary and most females usually won’t take. I have offered before to some females just to see and none have ever shown any interest for me. I think she probably knows what’s best for her either way, food or no food. I bet she won’t take again though, she should be running out of room in her belly!

I’m probably gonna hold off on feeding her any more cuz I don’t want her guts competing with digesting space with those eggs :joy:

She didn’t do this the last two times she laid which is a little odd, but eh, it is what it is I suppose.

She should be going into her prelay shed fairly soon, so we’ll see!

Update: I didn’t get a pic but Charlie is going into a prelay shed now, she’s in blue. So we’re still on the right track!

And….

Our first baby has pipped!
From the Zenith (pastel ghi) x Lucy (pastel super mojave) clutch — all the eggs made it to the end of incubation so I’m really happy for that!

Great pic! Can’t wait to see the rest of the python! I know for sure it’s at least a Mojave

I went and cut the eggs, so that was the baby that had pipped!

So many pretties!

Full transparency, I had cut one of the eggs maybe 12 ish hours earlier than the one that pipped because I was worried about the color of the egg and wanted to make sure the baby inside was still okay, and it was/is! Hence why the blood looks a little dried/old.

I see a beautiful ball in there…can’t wait to see everyone once they are out.

Pipped baby came out! It’s a boy, and I want to guess pastel mojave for his ID. Of course will wait until after shed for better pics and accurate IDs.

I nicknamed him “Horseshoe” — maybe you can guess why?

Bonus shot showing his egg tooth!

Good shot of egg tooth! I rarely ever see them and never get decent pics of it! I like the few thin bands going over his back! Also the horseshoe is cool! Very good looking boy!

The remaining babies have all finally come out of their eggs — unfortunately the one I cut a day early also turned out to be underdeveloped and passed away shortly after leaving the egg. One of my kingsnakes happily accepted the meal.

They all look big and healthy, I believe we have:
1.0 ghi mojave
0.1 pastel ghi mojave
1.1 pastel mojave ?
I’m not 100% confident on the two pastel mojaves, but from my research and looking at pictures, it seems the pastel causes some disturbance in the mojave pattern so that is why I think they are both pastel mojave.

I’ll of course post pics in a thread when they’ve shed and I’m ready to ask for IDs on them.

And the underdeveloped baby (it was still alive in these pics, just extremely weak and unresponsive. Seems like it didn’t absorb any of the yolk, but I also didn’t see anything wrong with the umbilical cord either.) :

Sorry you lost one, it does happen unfortunately. The rest of the clutch looks very good. I can’t wait to see them post shed! Good job on a great clutch!

Charlie surprised me with her clutch of eggs yesterday — she wasn’t due to lay for another couple days!

4 healthy eggs! Rather small clutch but they’re big eggs, around 110 grams per egg!

Pairing was 1.0 pastel ghi x 0.1 pewter

Big eggs! Cinny and ghi go great together! Can’t wait to see them! Congratulations on another great clutch this season! How many clutch’s are you up to this season anyway @trnreptiles ? I’m just curious:grin::+1:

This is the fifth and final clutch for the season!

The first to pip from Solaris’ clutch is an albino!

We hit at least 2 albinos, which is honestly crazy good odds coming from a het to het pairing in a 3 egg clutch.
These will be fun to ID once they’re out of the egg and have their first sheds :joy:

Also these babies are huge! No twins but big eggs = big babies I suppose?
