Oh no, that’s terrible! I hope that can all be cleared up easily and quickly for you ![]()
I’d be furious if I found out about that with no disclosure or warning…

A slightly more positive update: we bought full PPE today and evacuated all the snakes from my room. Unfortunately the ones closest to the bed were some of my most fragile, including all the baby garters. As of right now, everyone seems okay, and the garter enclosures and everything within are currently soaking in chlorhexidine. Roo, Danger, Seeker, Keeper, Cheeky, Sylvestris, and Ducky have all had to be moved from their tanks and into bins for the time being. I had, quite thankfully, removed almost everyone’s water dishes for cleaning before the fiberglass incident. The bigger issue is going to see what enrichment and decor is salvageable. I do not exactly have the money to replace everything at the moment.
Tomorrow’s goal is to salvage what I can from the screen top enclosures and decontaminate it all. I have to be exceedingly careful. We live in an old farmhouse without central air. To avoid stirring up any errant fiberglass particles, I can’t turn on the AC in my bedroom (part of why it was critical to get the snakes out, it was over 82ºF in there today) and while in full PPE, it gets hot fast. Today I actually gave myself a case of heat exhaustion and my brother had to yell at me to sit down, cool off, and hydrate so I wouldn’t end up passing out.
I’m feeling so very defeated, and will likely be seeing if I can’t pare down the number of juveniles I have rather quickly to lessen the overall workload/stress involved. I still haven’t heard a darn thing from Sleep Number about this, though I was told it could take 24-48 hours for anyone to contact me.
Ugh. What a nightmare. I hope full resolution comes soon.
Oh dear. Surprise fibreglass was on nobodies bingo
I hope everybody is safe!
Oh Jess! I’m so sorry! What a nightmare. I’m sure I’d feel defeated, too, in your shoes. I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself as well as your snakes.
I got nothing done yesterday besides picking up more PPE. It’s just so hard to find the motivation to deal with any of this, and I’m suffering lack of sleep due to having to be on the couch for now. It’s very hard to get any rest when you have medical conditions aggravated by the lack of bed, plus I’ve got four furry critters that are just so pleased to have a person to cuddle with so I frequently find myself with a Dachshund and from 1-3 cats also sharing the couch. My mother received a call from the company and as of this morning I’ve left a message for them to hopefully call me back. Other than that, today’s goals are the same as yesterday.
Had a terrifying moment this evening. Went into my room to get my tongs and scissors, only to realize that I’d left two of my three 2025 clutches in my bedroom when we evacuated the rest on Monday. Meaning they’ve been in there two extra days with no temp control. I did a quick life check and immediately pulled them out and moved them to the basement. Everyone is fine, if slightly warmer than usual.
Whew! Glad they’re ok.
Planning to get everyone fully fed and watered tomorrow. I’ve got an air mattress set up downstairs to hopefully get some meaningful sleep tonight, and we’ve got a roll-off dumpster arriving tomorrow to begin the real clean up/disposal.
Glad everyone seems to be okay. You must be exhausted! For you to forget something like that means you are EXTREMELY exhausted! Prayers you’ll have the energy to pull through this ordeal! ![]()

You definitely deserve it after all of that stress, I hope moving forward that cleanup is smooth sailing ![]()
I’m still dumbfounded that the bed full of fiberglass had no warning on it whatsoever. I guess its for insulation(?), but why on earth would someone manufacture mattresses with fiberglass in the first place considering the dangers it poses to people and animals??
I did get some sleep, however I was right outside my brother’s room and he was gaming until the wee hours, so not the best sleep. ![]()
The answer is that it is an encapsulated fiberglass “sock” used as a flame retardant. Supposedly, according to the company, this should not be an issue with regular use. I’m guessing time and friction wore down the fabric, so when I removed the cover to replace it, fibers went everywhere. Up until the cover was removed to be replaced, everything was fully contained within and not an issue.
I did talk to someone at the company today, and hopefully we are on the way to a resolution in that regard. Our dumpster should also arrive sometime today, and we will begin the process of decontamination/clean up. It’s thankfully not horrible, it could have been much worse, and I think most of my room can be salvaged minus the bed, bedding, and carpet. I’m finally starting to have a bit of hope that this headache will be over soon.
I’m the same way most of the time lol. Always cold ![]()
Unfortunately, if I get too hot or too cold I faint sooo I’m a homebody and my house is a balmy 76 degrees lol
I wish! My family would NOT tolerate 76. I have to just wear a sweater and wool socks while they enjoy 72. ![]()
Another update on the chaotic situation: Almost everyone has been fed, meaning i’m nearly caught up on all the chores that were derailed on Sunday. Our dumpster arrived this morning, so we will begin clean up officially now. I plan to finish feeding and salvage hides/decor/dishes when we’re back from my brother’s birthday dinner this evening. All in all, finally getting somewhere and feeling less like the world is ending.
I’m glad things are getting at least a little bit settled. I really hope you’re able to get some good rest tonight after the birthday dinner. Lack of rest compounds medical problems and makes things every so much harder.
My friend used to say, “the difference between a bright happy world, and a hopeless, discouraging one is a good night’s sleep.” Glad you’re feeling ready to tackle the chaos.
Tomorrow marks one week since this headache started, and I’m still really struggling with motivation even though there has been progress. I’m once again waiting to hear back from the company about next steps, whether they need more photos, etc. Until then I’m basically not touching my room as I don’t want to start clearing it only for them to tell me they need more proof or something. If I enter without PPE I have to be exceedingly careful, as I have accidentally brushed against the bed a couple of times and come out with fiberglass contamination. I have multiple lint rollers on hand to deal with that.
Still not done with snake chores. Most don’t have water at the moment, that’s tomorrow’s goal. I also need to turn a few of the larger enclosures my brother set down facing the wrong way so I can more easily monitor their inhabitants. The rest of the collection now needs feeding, as well. Tonight I managed to put labels on every bin that didn’t yet have one so I’m not having to guess who is in the unlabeled bins anymore.
As for the baby garters, despite being closest to my bed and in porous topped enclosures, they’re thriving. Four of the larger ones have shed, and the other seven are in blue. I should really go in and retrieve my scale so I can keep up with weights.
That’s great news! Sounds like the little buggers are fairly resilient or maybe just plain lucky!
