Monday has brought renewed motivation (and more emails to the bed company). So far I’ve managed to re-weigh the garters, get a bunch of non-snake related things done, salvage some hides and water dishes from the enclosures still in my room, washed and disinfected every water dish. Now I’m getting ready to spot clean, place/fill water dishes, and then finally get to feeding everyone on the list.
The largest of the garters is now 4.1g and growing like a weed. That little one is a wild type and definitely the definition of fat and happy. The two smallest are both albinos, at 2.9g but catching up to their larger siblings. I’m really happy with the way everyone is looking at the moment.
I didn’t get everything accomplished today, but I did get everyone watered, spot cleaned, and two of the most important ones fed, so I’m calling it a win. I also got a bunch of other household chores done and the internet folks called out for some trouble there. Hopefully this week gets everything moving in such a way that I can start thinking about getting back to my room.
I used to do the same with my CGs, but they got too noisy at night and kept me up
And then I kept my Ribbon snakes in my room for a while for quarantine because my QT room had been already occupied and I didn’t want to cross-contaminate WC qt with CBB qt. My presence ended up stressing the poor things out a bit too much so after their QT was finished they were moved into my reptile room.
Hopefully that comes soon for you! I understand all too well what its like to not have that personal space
Glad things are moving along. You’ve been handling all of the extra challenges like the true champ we all know that you are. I hope you’re back in your bedroom soon, with whichever creatures you choose.
I’m another one who keeps snakes in her bedroom. I’d miss them if there weren’t any in here!
Thank you all for being so supportive, honestly knowing you all are here has been a huge morale boost when I’m feeling particularly down.
Today’s goal is get everyone fed. I’ve had to delay that due to heat and exhaustion, apparently I’ve been pushing myself a bit too hard at times. Because everyone is in the basement now, all chores require multiple trips up and down the stairs in 82ºF heat. It’s a lot to handle. All that said, I submitted my receipts to the bed company today, so we’ll see what, if anything, they decide to cover/replace. Once I know what’s happening there, the real work on my room begins.
As for the baby garters, 7 out of 11 have shed now. Just four smaller albinos left to go. Hoping once it cools down that I can get some real photos of these kids.
Despite the oppressive heat, everyone is officially fed! Currently watching the garters enjoy their chopped pinky buffet while I take a needed break. Did have to pull two of the smaller ones apart, someone thought their sibling had the best piece and so tried to eat their head. This is why I always sit and observe feedings for a good long while.
When I feed my Ribbon snakes I have to watch the female to make sure she doesn’t chomp the male, who is about 3/4 her size. Whenever he gets a bite of fish and she doesn’t have one and starts eyeballing him I have to distract her and let her stuff her face so the male can in peace
Thankfully I’ve never had a full-blown “Imma eat’chu” moment, yet… I can’t imagine watching it happen with 2 tiny babies.
Thankfully my adult garter pair are basically the same size and eating mice, so I just give each food and they eat at about the same speed. The babies, though…Tiny little gluttons who absolutely will fight over every piece, even when their “plate” is covered in food. The little one had their sibling’s whole head inside their mouth, only the lower jaw was sticking out. Thankfully they’re incredibly easy to separate, but it was like, why must you be like this?! There was basically 100 other pieces of food that could have been easily grabbed, but nope, sibling’s piece was required, no matter if their head got in the way.
This is amusing but also a bit heartwarming as well! I can just imagine these 2 little snakelett kids thinking “Mine! No mine! Mine Mine Mine”! I’m sure it’s part of the survival mode and definitely supervision is imperative when feeding multiples in the same enclosure but this behavior makes them more endearing to me. At least the way you described this particular incident made me chuckle!
I’m so glad that things are progressing. I hope that the bed company does right by you.
You know, it strikes me that this is a pretty fair summary of many sibling relationships when they’re young. I swear, my triplets went through a phase in their toddler-hood when they could and would bite as quick as little rattlesnakes. This was nearly always over a toy, while surrounded by toys in roomful of other toys. Lol
Time for a baby garter update! The largest of them is now 4.8g, and there is only one left in the big kid enclosure that is under 4g (3.9g). As for the little kids, they aren’t catching up as fast, with the smallest being 3.1g. Biggest weight gain overall in the past week goes to the albino known currently as number 3, who gained a whole gram in seven days! The average gain this last week for the big kids was .7g, and the total weight gained amongst all six was 4.4g. For the littles, the average gain was .3g, with a total weight gained between those five at 1.6g.
That’s a tremendous percentage gain! Sounds like everybody is doing well. I’m totally loving the vicarious pleasure of your delightful batch of baby garters.
